Medicine and health

Emergency Medical Services

The shortest degree route to independent clinical decision-making anywhere in health care. Three to five years, a licence, and responsibility that arrives immediately.

How long
Two to four years depending on whether you take the diploma or the bachelor's, plus an internship year in the Saudi system. The choice between them sets your classification for the whole career.

What you actually study

As opposed to what the name suggests.

  • Anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology focused on what goes wrong acutely.
  • Pharmacology and drug administration under protocol, examined ruthlessly because the drugs are given without a doctor present.
  • Advanced airway management, cardiac care, trauma and obstetric emergencies — the interventions you will perform yourself.
  • Scene management, extrication and working alongside fire and police, which is a skill in its own right.
  • Extensive placement on ambulances and in emergency departments, from early in the course.

The hardest part

Not the academic content, which is manageable, but the accumulation. Repeated exposure to death, including children, without adequate time to process any of it, is the occupational hazard of this profession and the reason attrition after a few years is high. The second difficulty is the gap between the job trained for and the job done: a large and growing share of calls are not emergencies at all, and that surprises people.

What you need to get in

By school system. Requirements are set by individual universities and change — confirm on the course page for the year you apply.

Saudi curriculum track

requiredمسار الصحة والحياة — Health and Life Sciences

Through the applied medical sciences or EMS colleges on the health composite, at one of the lower thresholds among health programmes — which makes it a genuinely reachable route to clinical practice.

A-Level

helpsBiology · Chemistry · Physical Education · Psychology

Most degree programmes want one science, usually biology. Entry grades are far below medicine's and say nothing about the difficulty of the work.

IB Diploma

helpsBiology HL or SL · Sports, Exercise and Health Science · Psychology

A Group 4 science is the usual requirement.

Advanced Placement

helpsAP Biology · AP Psychology · AP Statistics

In the US the standard route is EMT certification followed by a paramedic programme or associate degree rather than a four-year bachelor's.

IGCSE

Biology, mathematics and English. Drug calculation is examined throughout and clear communication is a clinical safety requirement, not a formality.

Tests and other gates

  • Driving licence and emergency drivingDuring training

An absolute requirement in every system, and one people forget to plan for.

  • Physical and medical assessmentAt entry

This job involves lifting people in bad positions. Back and joint conditions can be disqualifying, and the medical standard is real.

  • Qudurat and TahsiliGrade 11 and 12

    The Saudi admission composite.

  • SCFHS classificationAfter the internship year

Governs scope and pay, and follows the qualification — which is why the diploma-versus-bachelor's decision matters far beyond the extra two years.

What closes this door

  • Fewer academic doors close here than in any other clinical route, which is the honest argument for it.
  • The medical and physical standard is the real gate, and no amount of academic preparation changes it.

Where it leads

Careers written up on this site, and the reason each one follows from this degree.

  • Paramedic

The direct destination — prehospital clinical practice with real autonomy within a few years of leaving school.

  • Registered Nurse

A common second career, with bridging routes in several systems and far more onward specialisation.

  • Emergency Physician

Not from this degree — that requires medicine — and a route some paramedics do take later, with full knowledge of what it costs.

  • Regulatory Inspector

Health facility inspection, ambulance service standards and occupational safety.

  • Secondary School Teacher

Clinical education and training, which is where a large share of experienced paramedics move.

  • Compliance Officer

Clinical governance and patient safety roles inside health systems.

And, without a page here yet

  • Critical care and retrieval paramedicine
  • Air ambulance and helicopter emergency medical services
  • Industrial and remote-site medical cover — better paid than the ambulance service
  • Event and mass-gathering medicine, which in the Kingdom means Hajj and Umrah
  • Ambulance operations management and dispatch
  • Emergency preparedness and disaster planning

What it is not

  • That it is driving ambulances. Paramedics make independent clinical decisions, administer drugs and run resuscitations without a doctor present.
  • That it is a stepping stone to medicine. It is a profession in its own right, and treating it as a stepping stone usually produces an unhappy paramedic.
  • That the pay reflects the responsibility. It does not, anywhere, and this is the clearest mismatch between demand and reward on this site.

In Saudi Arabia

Prehospital care in the Kingdom is strongly nationalised and the Saudi Red Crescent Authority is the principal employer, recruiting in intakes rather than continuously. Two markets are less well known and worth naming: industrial emergency medical cover at Aramco, petrochemical sites and remote operations, which pays materially better than the ambulance service; and the annual Hajj and Umrah medical operation, which is among the largest recurring mass-gathering deployments in the world and creates genuine specialisation in mass-casualty and heat-illness management. SCFHS classification governs scope and pay throughout.

The parts that go out of date

Entry requirements are the fastest-moving information on this site. These are the statements most likely to have changed.

  • The credential bar is rising internationally — the UK has moved to a degree requirement and others are following.
  • SCFHS classification levels and the scope attached to each are periodically revised.

Where this came from

Admission patterns stated by emergency medical services programmes in the Kingdom and by paramedic science degrees in the UK, and the SCFHS classification structure governing practice here. Individual programmes vary and must be checked directly.

Last checked 2026-09-06. The requirements above describe the pattern across universities, not any one of them — the course page for the year you apply is the only thing that is ever authoritative.
