School qualifications
AP
Advanced Placement
Individual university-level courses you can take one at a time, examined each May and scored out of 5. They are how a US-system student proves rigour — and how a strong one arrives at university with a semester already done.
- When
- Usually Grade 10–12, one subject at a time
- Where it counts
- US qualification, taken in over 100 countries and accepted for credit by universities in the US, Canada and increasingly the Gulf
How it works
Unlike the IB or A-Levels, AP is not a diploma. It is a menu of about forty standalone courses, each with a single exam in May, and you take as many or as few as your school offers and your timetable allows. A typical strong US-system applicant to a selective university takes somewhere between five and nine across Grades 10 to 12; there is no fixed number and no completion requirement.
Each exam is scored 1 to 5. Universities publish credit policies stating what they will grant for each score — commonly a 4 or 5 earns credit or advanced placement, sometimes a 3. This is real money and real time: a student arriving with credit for calculus, chemistry and composition can graduate early or take harder courses sooner.
For admissions, the score matters less than the choice. US universities read your transcript against what your school offered — taking the hardest courses available to you is the signal, and a school that offers four APs is judged on four. The score arrives in July, after most applications are decided, which is why the course selection carries more weight than the result.
How it is graded
1 to 5, where 5 is 'extremely well qualified'. Most universities grant credit at 4 or 5; the most selective often grant placement rather than credit, or nothing at all. There is no aggregate, no diploma and no combined score — each exam stands alone.
When to sit it
Exams run over two weeks in early-to-mid May, with a late-testing window. Registration closes in the autumn — typically early November — and late registration carries a fee. Missing that deadline means waiting a full year, which is the most common avoidable AP mistake.
What it is good for
- US and Canadian university applications, where AP is the standard evidence of rigorous coursework.
- Earning actual university credit before you arrive — frequently a semester's worth, occasionally a year's.
- Students in a US-curriculum school, or anyone who wants to add depth in one subject without committing to a whole two-year diploma.

Mathematics and computer science

AP Calculus AB

Roughly one semester of university calculus. Whether a US university admits you into an engineering major frequently depends on having calculus on the transcript, not on the score.

AP Calculus BC
OpensEngineering · Physics · Mathematics · Quantitative finance · Computer science
Covers AB and roughly a second semester on top, and reports an AB subscore. The stronger signal for engineering and physics, and worth more credit.

AP Precalculus
OpensAny quantitative degree — it is the on-ramp rather than the destination
Introduced in 2023 for students who need the year before calculus. Useful preparation; it is not the course a selective engineering programme is looking for on its own.
AP Statistics
OpensPsychology · Biology and life sciences · Economics · Business · Public health · Data science · Social sciences
The most under-rated exam on this list. Statistics is what medicine, psychology, biology and economics degrees actually run on, and most students meet it for the first time at university.

AP Computer Science A

A real programming course, taught in Java, and the one that counts for a computing major. Frequently earns credit for a first programming course.

AP Computer Science Principles
OpensInformation systems · Any degree — a broad computing literacy course
Broader and much lighter than Computer Science A, with a project component. A good first exposure, not a substitute for CS A if you intend to study computing.

AP Biology
OpensMedicine (pre-med) · Biomedical science · Nursing · Public health · Life sciences · Veterinary medicine · Psychology
Standard pre-med preparation. Note that many US medical schools will not accept AP credit in place of the university biology sequence — the credit is useful, the requirement usually still has to be taken.

Choosing well
The parts a student can act on this month.
- Depth in the direction you are going beats collecting exams. Five APs including Calculus BC, Physics C and Chemistry says more to an engineering admissions officer than nine assorted ones.
- Take the calculus-based Physics C, not Physics 1, if you are heading for engineering or physics — and take it with or after calculus, because it assumes the mathematics.
- AP Statistics is worth more than its reputation. Medicine, psychology, biology, economics and business all run on statistics, and it is the one piece of mathematics most students arrive at university without.
- Register in the autumn. AP registration deadlines fall around early November, months before the May exams, and a missed registration is a lost year for that subject.
- Check the credit policy of universities you actually care about before deciding how many to take. The most selective often grant placement without credit, which changes the calculation entirely.
What costs people a year
- AP is not a diploma. There is no AP equivalent of the IB's 45 or of three A-Level grades, so a university outside the US may not know how to read a transcript of standalone APs — several UK universities will not make an offer on APs alone without a US high school diploma alongside, and some require specific scores in three or more.
- US medical schools frequently refuse AP credit in place of the required pre-med biology, chemistry and physics sequences. Taking the credit and skipping the course can leave you without the prerequisite years later.
- Scores arrive in July, after admissions decisions. The transcript rigour is what gets read at application time; the score matters for credit afterwards.
- Self-studying an AP without the course is possible and is a weaker signal than it feels like. Universities read the transcript, and an exam score with no course behind it is not the same evidence.
In Saudi Arabia
AP is offered by the American-curriculum schools in Riyadh, Jeddah, Dhahran and Al Khobar, and it is the natural route for students aiming at US universities — including on Saudi government scholarship programmes, which have historically sent large numbers of students to the US. Inside Saudi Arabia, KAUST, Alfaisal and KFUPM are familiar with AP transcripts; the public universities are not, and admit on the national GPA plus Qudurat and Tahsili regardless. If your realistic list is US-heavy, AP plus a strong SAT is the standard combination and it works well.
The parts that go out of date
Everything on this page was read from the awarding body on the date below. These are the statements most likely to have moved since.
- University credit policies change annually, and the same score can be worth a full course at one university and nothing at another. Always check the specific institution's AP credit page.
- Which AP courses a school offers changes with staffing — the course list is national, the availability is local.
- College Board revises courses on a rolling basis: Precalculus was added in 2023, African American Studies more recently, and Physics 1 and 2 were revised for 2024–25. Check the current course description rather than an older prep book.

Nothing here is sold or sponsored, and there is no affiliate link on this site. Where an awarding body publishes its own past papers, those are listed instead of a revision guide — the UCAT and LNAT consortia both state outright that paid coaching is unnecessary and unendorsed, and the same is broadly true of every exam on this page.
