Medicine and health
Nursing
Serious clinical responsibility in three to four years, with a qualification that works in almost every country on earth. The most portable degree in health care and the most consistently underestimated.
- How long
- Three to four years, roughly half of it spent on clinical placement rather than in lectures, plus an internship year in the Saudi system.
- Called
- BSc Nursing · BN · بكالوريوس التمريض
What you actually study
As opposed to what the name suggests.
- Anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology — less than medicine, and more than most people assume.
- Pharmacology and drug calculation, examined ruthlessly because the consequences of an error are immediate.
- Clinical skills taught in a laboratory and then practised on real wards from the first year.
- Assessment and clinical judgement: recognising the patient who is deteriorating before the numbers say so, which is the skill the profession is actually built on.
- Communication, ethics and law, plus the management of a ward — nurses run the shift, and that is taught.
The hardest part
Placements. You are working full shifts, including nights, while also being examined, and often unpaid. The academic load is manageable; the combination of physical work, emotional exposure and coursework in the same week is what people underestimate. The second difficulty is the gap between the responsibility you carry and the pay and authority attached to it, which is a structural feature of the profession rather than a starting-out problem.
What you need to get in
By school system. Requirements are set by individual universities and change — confirm on the course page for the year you apply.
Saudi curriculum track
requiredمسار الصحة والحياة — Health and Life Sciences
Admitted on the health-college composite, at a lower threshold than medicine, dentistry or pharmacy. That threshold is the reason many strong candidates never consider it — and the reason it is one of the best value degrees in the Kingdom.
A-Level
helpsBiology · Chemistry · Psychology · Physical Education
Most nursing programmes require one science, usually biology, rather than a fixed pair. Entry grades are far below medicine's, and that says nothing about the difficulty of the work.
IB Diploma
helpsBiology HL or SL · Chemistry · Psychology
A science at HL strengthens the application; most programmes ask for a science somewhere in the six rather than naming HL subjects.
Advanced Placement
helpsAP Biology · AP Psychology · AP Statistics · AP Chemistry
US nursing is usually entered directly as a BSN, with these as strong preparation for the prerequisite science sequence.
IGCSE
Biology and mathematics matter most; drug calculation is a recurring examined component, and English is a clinical safety requirement rather than a formality.
Tests and other gates
- QuduratFrom Grade 11
Part of the Saudi admission composite for every applicant.
- Tahsili (science)End of Grade 12
Required for health-college admission.
- IELTS or equivalentBefore applying abroad, and again for registration
Nursing regulators in the UK, Australia and the Gulf often require a higher English score than the university did — check the regulator's requirement, not just the university's.
What closes this door
- Fewer doors close here than in any other health degree, which is a genuine argument for it as a route into clinical work.
- Registration abroad frequently depends on an English score above the university's own requirement, and that catches graduates out years later.
Where it leads
Careers written up on this site, and the reason each one follows from this degree.
- Registered Nurse
The direct destination, and one of the few clinical roles reachable in three years.
- Epidemiologist
A common route out of direct care, via a master's in public health.
- Policy Analyst
Health policy and workforce planning, where clinical experience is treated as evidence rather than background.
- Secondary School Teacher
Clinical education and teaching, inside health systems or in schools.
- Compliance Officer
Clinical governance, accreditation and patient safety roles.
- Clinical Psychologist
Mental health nursing is a route towards psychological practice, usually via further study.
And, without a page here yet
- Nurse practitioner and advanced clinical practice, with prescribing rights
- Nurse anaesthesia — among the best-paid clinical roles reachable without a medical degree
- Midwifery, critical care, theatre and emergency specialisation
- Nursing management and hospital administration
- Clinical research and trial coordination
- Health informatics
What it is not
- That it is what you do if you cannot get into medicine. It is a different profession with a different scope, and the advanced practice routes reach clinical authority that surprises people.
- That it is a low ceiling. Nurse anaesthetists and advanced practitioners out-earn several medical specialties in some systems, and management routes go a long way.
- That the degree is easy because the entry grades are lower. The failure rate on placement-heavy programmes is not low, and the work filters people harder than the exams do.
In Saudi Arabia
Nursing in the Kingdom has historically depended heavily on expatriate staff, and nationalising the workforce is an explicit and funded health-sector priority — which means a licensed Saudi nurse faces unusually little competition and unusually strong institutional support. SCFHS classification governs scope and pay, and the classification level follows the qualification, so the choice between a diploma and a bachelor's has consequences for an entire career. The degree is also the most internationally portable qualification on this whole site.
Consider instead
Same interest, different trade-off — the most useful section on this page and the easiest to skip.
- MedicineThe final clinical decision, at three to four times the training length.
- PharmacyMedicines rather than patients, with a licence and better hours.
- PsychologyThe mental health side of care, through a different and less clinical route.
- Biology and Biomedical ScienceThe science underneath, without patients or shifts.
The parts that go out of date
Entry requirements are the fastest-moving information on this site. These are the statements most likely to have changed.
- English language requirements for nursing registration differ by regulator and have trended upward.
- Saudi health-sector nationalisation targets and the incentives attached to them are revised periodically.
Where this came from
Admission patterns stated by UK and Saudi nursing schools and the structure of registration through the relevant regulators. Individual courses vary and must be checked directly.
Last checked 2026-09-06. The requirements above describe the pattern across universities, not any one of them — the course page for the year you apply is the only thing that is ever authoritative.
