Accounting and Finance

The degree that leads most reliably to a professional qualification, and the professional qualification is the thing that matters. Unglamorous, portable and close to recession-proof.

How long
Four years in the Kingdom, three to four in the UK, followed by three or more years of professional examinations while working.

What you actually study

As opposed to what the name suggests.

  • Financial accounting — how transactions become statements, and the standards that govern it.
  • Management accounting: costing, budgeting and the numbers used to run a business rather than report it.
  • Audit and assurance, including why an audit is a sampling exercise rather than a guarantee.
  • Corporate finance, valuation and investment analysis.
  • Tax, law and ethics — and ethics here is not decorative, because the failures in this profession are ethical rather than technical.

The hardest part

The professional examinations after the degree, taken while working full time, are harder than the degree and are what actually qualify you. Pass rates are meaningfully below 100% and people repeat papers. The other difficulty is that the first years of audit are demanding, repetitive and busy-season-driven, and a substantial number of people leave once qualified — which is normal and is why the qualification is valuable.

What you need to get in

By school system. Requirements are set by individual universities and change — confirm on the course page for the year you apply.

Saudi curriculum track

requiredمسار إدارة الأعمال — Business Administration

The business track is the natural route, and the science tracks are also accepted. SOCPA — the Saudi Organization for Chartered and Professional Accountants — governs the professional qualification afterwards, and its exams are the real credential.

A-Level

helpsMathematics · Economics · Business Studies

Mathematics is rarely a formal requirement and is strongly advantageous — this is one of the few business-adjacent degrees where selective universities do ask for it.

IB Diploma

helpsMathematics: Applications and Interpretation HL or Analysis and Approaches · Economics HL · Business Management

This is one of the degrees where Maths AI HL is genuinely well suited and widely accepted.

Advanced Placement

helpsAP Calculus AB · AP Statistics · AP Microeconomics · AP Macroeconomics

Statistics and the economics pair are the most relevant; there is no AP in accounting.

IGCSE

Solid mathematics is what matters. Business studies and economics are useful for finding out whether the subject interests you.

Tests and other gates

  • Qudurat and TahsiliGrade 11 and 12

The Saudi admission composite; some business colleges require the humanities Tahsili and some do not.

  • SAT or ACTGrade 11 to early Grade 12

For US applications, where business schools are often a separate admission.

  • Professional examinationsAfter graduation, over three or more years

SOCPA, ACCA, CPA, CIMA or ICAEW. This is the qualification employers pay for and value; the degree mainly buys you exemptions from parts of it.

What closes this door

  • Very few doors close at school level — this is one of the most accessible routes to a well-paid professional career.
  • What closes later is the professional qualification: without it, accounting work has a low ceiling, and with it the ceiling is high.

Where it leads

Careers written up on this site, and the reason each one follows from this degree.

  • External Auditor

The most direct destination, through a professional qualification with one of the large firms or in industry.

  • Forensic Accountant

Fraud and investigation work, entered after qualifying and among the most interesting places this route goes.

  • Investment Banker

A well-trodden route in, particularly through valuation and transaction services.

  • Compliance Officer

Financial crime, regulatory and compliance work, which has grown steadily and pays well.

  • Management Consultant

The advisory arms of the same firms recruit heavily from this degree.

  • Economist

Reachable with a quantitative master's, for those who find the theory more interesting than the practice.

  • Regulatory Inspector

Financial regulation and supervision, where audit experience is directly relevant.

  • Actuary

A parallel professional-exam route for the more mathematically inclined.

And, without a page here yet

  • Corporate finance and treasury
  • Financial controller and CFO tracks
  • Tax advisory
  • Private equity and investment analysis
  • Starting or running a business, where these are the skills you cannot outsource cheaply

What it is not

  • That the degree is the qualification. It is not — the professional exams are, and employers hire on them. A degree in something else plus the exams is an equally valid route.
  • That automation is ending accounting. Bookkeeping is being automated; judgement, audit opinion, tax structuring and forensic work are not, and regulation keeps expanding.
  • That it is only for people who like numbers. Much of the senior work is judgement, negotiation and writing.

In Saudi Arabia

Unusually strong here for structural reasons. SOCPA governs the profession and Saudization in accounting and finance roles is significant, so a qualified Saudi accountant is in demand. The expansion of financial regulation, the growth of the Saudi capital market, IFRS adoption and the audit requirements attached to Vision 2030's institutional reforms have all increased demand for qualified professionals. The large international firms all have substantial Riyadh practices and recruit graduates annually.

The parts that go out of date

Entry requirements are the fastest-moving information on this site. These are the statements most likely to have changed.

  • Professional body exemptions for a given degree are published per programme and change.
  • Saudization thresholds and professional licensing requirements in finance are periodically revised.

Where this came from

Admission patterns stated by accounting and finance departments in the UK and the Gulf, and the exemption structures published by the professional accountancy bodies. Employment patterns reasoned from the structure of the audit and finance professions.

Last checked 2026-09-06. The requirements above describe the pattern across universities, not any one of them — the course page for the year you apply is the only thing that is ever authoritative.
