Computing and mathematics
Statistics
The discipline that decides whether evidence supports a claim. Unfashionable, under-subscribed, and quietly the foundation of medicine, economics and everything now labelled data science.
- How long
- Three to four years for the bachelor's, plus a master's that is close to an entry requirement rather than an advantage.
- Called
- BSc Statistics · BSc Mathematics and Statistics · MSc Statistics or Biostatistics · بكالوريوس الإحصاء
What you actually study
As opposed to what the name suggests.
- Probability theory — the mathematical spine of everything that follows.
- Statistical inference: estimation, hypothesis testing, confidence, and what they do and do not mean.
- Regression and modelling, the workhorse of applied statistics in every field that uses it.
- Experimental design and sampling — how to collect data that can answer the question, which is where the real value is added.
- Statistical computing, plus a specialism such as biostatistics, official statistics or survey methodology.
The hardest part
Two things. The mathematics is harder than the popular image of statistics suggests — this is a proof-carrying subject, not a spreadsheet one. And the professional habit the degree instils, of refusing to overclaim, is genuinely uncomfortable to practise: you will spend a career telling people their evidence does not support their conclusion, and they will rarely be pleased.
What you need to get in
By school system. Requirements are set by individual universities and change — confirm on the course page for the year you apply.
Saudi curriculum track
requiredمسار علوم الحاسب والهندسة — Computer Science and Engineering, or مسار الصحة والحياة for a biostatistics route
Either science-side track works, and the choice quietly determines the specialism: health and life sciences leads naturally towards biostatistics and public health, computing and engineering towards official and industrial statistics.
A-Level
requiredMathematics
helpsFurther Mathematics · Biology · Economics
Mathematics is required. Biology is genuinely useful if biostatistics interests you, which is where most of the jobs are.
IB Diploma
requiredMathematics: Analysis and Approaches HL
helpsBiology HL · Economics HL
AA HL. It is a recurring irony that Applications and Interpretation — the statistics-flavoured course — is accepted by fewer statistics departments than AA is.
Advanced Placement
helpsAP Calculus BC · AP Statistics · AP Biology
AP Statistics is genuinely aligned here, though Calculus BC is the one that carries the admission.
IGCSE
Extended-tier mathematics and Additional Mathematics where offered.
Tests and other gates
- TMUAOctober
Advantageous at several UK universities for mathematical and economics courses.
- Qudurat and TahsiliGrade 11 and 12
The Saudi admission composite.
- Postgraduate admissionFinal year of the bachelor's
The real gate for this profession. Around seven in ten statisticians hold a master's or doctorate, so plan the bachelor's with that in mind.
What closes this door
- Without A-Level or IB HL mathematics, this degree is closed and there is no non-mathematical entry to the profession.
- A bachelor's alone limits you to junior analytical roles in most markets; the master's is the effective professional entry.
Where it leads
Careers written up on this site, and the reason each one follows from this degree.
- Statistician
The direct destination, in health research, government or industry.
- Actuary
The same statistics with professional exams and a protected credential attached.
- Data Scientist
The most common industry route, and one where statistical training is a genuine advantage.
- Epidemiologist
Biostatistics is the largest employer of statisticians and the most direct health route.
- Quantitative Analyst
Finance, for the mathematically strongest.
- Economist
Applied econometrics is statistics under another name.
- Machine Learning Engineer
Reachable with programming added, and statistically better grounded than most who arrive there.
- Policy Analyst
Evidence-based policy work, where the scarce skill is knowing what the evidence will not support.
And, without a page here yet
- Clinical trials and pharmaceutical development
- National statistics offices and census work
- Survey research and polling
- Quality and reliability engineering in industry
- Statistical genetics and bioinformatics
What it is not
- That data science replaced it. Data science borrowed its methods and dropped some of its rigour; the profession that signs off on whether a medicine works is this one.
- That it is a lesser mathematics degree. The probability theory is demanding, and applying it honestly to messy real data is harder than applying it to clean problems.
- That the jobs are scarce. Biostatistics reports persistent shortages; what is scarce is students choosing it.
In Saudi Arabia
Three employers matter here: the General Authority for Statistics for official statistics, the health system and its growing clinical research sector for biostatistics, and the banks and insurers for risk and analytics. The pool of postgraduate-qualified Saudi statisticians is small, and the health sector in particular is under-supplied — which makes this an unusually favourable market for anyone willing to do the master's. No licence, no recognition barrier, so study abroad is easy to return from.
Consider instead
Same interest, different trade-off — the most useful section on this page and the easiest to skip.
- MathematicsThe broader foundation, which keeps this and every other quantitative route open.
- Data Science and Artificial IntelligenceThe same material with more computing and less rigour, in a much more crowded market.
- EconomicsStatistics applied to markets and policy, with argument and writing attached.
- Biology and Biomedical ScienceThe domain half of biostatistics, if the health application is the appeal.
The parts that go out of date
Entry requirements are the fastest-moving information on this site. These are the statements most likely to have changed.
- Postgraduate requirements are a professional norm rather than a rule, and the norm could soften in industry roles.
- Which departments accept IB Maths AI HL varies.
Where this came from
Admission patterns stated by statistics departments in the UK and the US, which name mathematics; the postgraduate requirement is documented in the occupation's own education distribution.
Last checked 2026-09-06. The requirements above describe the pattern across universities, not any one of them — the course page for the year you apply is the only thing that is ever authoritative.
