Business and economics

Business Administration and Management

The most popular degree in the world, and the one where the university and what you do alongside it matter more than the subject. Genuinely useful when taken seriously; the least distinguishing choice when not.

How long
Four years in the Kingdom and the US, three to four in the UK, frequently with an internship or placement.
Called
BBA · BSc Management · BA Business Administration · بكالوريوس إدارة الأعمال

What you actually study

As opposed to what the name suggests.

  • Accounting and finance basics, marketing, operations and organisational behaviour — a survey of every function a company has.
  • Strategy: how firms compete, and the frameworks for arguing about it.
  • Statistics and business analytics, which is the part that most improves your employability and the part most students take least seriously.
  • Law, ethics and human resources, plus increasingly entrepreneurship and digital business.
  • Case work and group projects, which teach the negotiation and presentation skills the degree is really selling.

The hardest part

Distinguishing yourself. The content is broad rather than difficult, and enormous numbers of people hold this degree — which means employers screen on the university, on internships, on languages, and on demonstrated numeracy rather than on the qualification itself. Students who treat it as four years of general study frequently graduate with no obvious claim on any specific job; students who use it to accumulate internships and a quantitative or technical specialism do very well.

What you need to get in

By school system. Requirements are set by individual universities and change — confirm on the course page for the year you apply.

Saudi curriculum track

requiredمسار إدارة الأعمال — Business Administration

The business track is the direct route. Note that this track also closes engineering, medicine and computer science at Saudi public universities, so it should be chosen deliberately rather than as the default non-science option.

A-Level

helpsMathematics · Economics · Business Studies · A language

Almost no business school names a required subject, which is why what you take matters for the option value rather than for admission. Mathematics keeps the quantitative doors open; three business-adjacent subjects keep nothing open.

IB Diploma

helpsMathematics: Applications and Interpretation · Economics · Business Management · A second language

Maths AI is well suited here and widely accepted, which is not true of engineering or economics.

Advanced Placement

helpsAP Microeconomics · AP Macroeconomics · AP Statistics · AP Calculus AB · AP English Language

US business schools frequently admit directly into the major and read quantitative preparation closely.

IGCSE

Mathematics and English are what carry weight. Business Studies IGCSE is not required and is not weighted highly by selective universities.

Tests and other gates

  • Qudurat and TahsiliGrade 11 and 12

The Saudi admission composite; check whether the specific college requires the humanities Tahsili.

  • SAT or ACTGrade 11 to early Grade 12

For US applications, and business is often a separately competitive admission within the university.

  • IELTS or TOEFLBefore applying abroad

Required almost everywhere for international admission.

What closes this door

  • Almost nothing closes at admission, which is the honest appeal of this degree.
  • What closes is later: without mathematics or a technical specialism, the analytical, finance and consulting routes are much harder to enter from here.

Where it leads

Careers written up on this site, and the reason each one follows from this degree.

  • Management Consultant

A major destination, though the top firms recruit heavily from more selective universities and from quantitative degrees too.

  • Compliance Officer

Governance, risk and compliance — a growing, well-paid and under-considered route.

  • External Auditor

Reachable through the professional accountancy exams, which are open after any degree.

  • Investment Banker

Possible, and more competitive from here than from economics or a quantitative degree.

  • UX Designer

Product and marketing routes converge on this; the degree is a common starting point for product roles.

  • Journalist

Business and financial journalism, where subject knowledge is the differentiator.

  • Policy Analyst

Public administration and economic development bodies, particularly in the Kingdom.

And, without a page here yet

  • Marketing, brand and commercial management
  • Human resources and organisational development
  • Supply chain and operations management
  • Retail, hospitality and event management
  • Sales and business development
  • Founding a company

What it is not

  • That it teaches you to run a business. It teaches the vocabulary and the frameworks; the running is learned by doing, and the degree is most valuable to people who are already doing something.
  • That it is the safe choice. It is the common choice, which is not the same thing — a business degree from an unselective university with no internships is a weak position.
  • That it is easier than economics. It is broader and less mathematical, which suits some people and is a genuine trade rather than a shortcut.

In Saudi Arabia

There is real demand here, and it is concentrated in specific places: the banks, the sovereign investment institutions, the international consultancies with large Riyadh practices, the giga-project delivery organisations and the rapidly expanding retail, tourism and entertainment sectors. Saudization in administrative and commercial roles is substantial, which helps. What distinguishes candidates in this market is English, a quantitative or technical skill, and internships — not the degree, which almost everyone applying will also have.

Consider instead

Same interest, different trade-off — the most useful section on this page and the easiest to skip.

The parts that go out of date

Entry requirements are the fastest-moving information on this site. These are the statements most likely to have changed.

  • Graduate recruitment in this area is more sensitive to economic conditions than professional-qualification routes are.
  • Saudization thresholds in commercial and administrative roles are revised periodically.

Where this came from

Admission patterns stated by business schools in the UK, the Gulf and the US, most of which state no required subject. Destination patterns reasoned from consistently reported business graduate outcomes and from the structure of graduate recruitment.

Last checked 2026-09-06. The requirements above describe the pattern across universities, not any one of them — the course page for the year you apply is the only thing that is ever authoritative.
