Engineering
Aerospace Engineering
Mechanical engineering where weight is the binding constraint and failure is not survivable. Narrower than it looks, and the sector matters as much as the subject.
- How long
- Four to five years. A master's is common and is close to expected for design roles.
- Called
- BEng · MEng · BSc Aerospace Engineering · بكالوريوس هندسة الطيران
What you actually study
As opposed to what the name suggests.
- Aerodynamics — the behaviour of air over a surface, and the mathematics that predicts it.
- Propulsion: jet engines, rockets, and the thermodynamics that governs both.
- Structures and materials, where every kilogram is argued over and composites dominate.
- Flight dynamics, stability and control, plus avionics and systems integration.
- Certification and airworthiness, because in this industry the regulator decides what can fly.
The hardest part
The aerodynamics and structures sequence is genuinely demanding, and the degree assumes a stronger mathematical base than most engineering courses. The career difficulty is different: the employers are few, concentrated in a handful of countries, and hiring moves with defence budgets and airline cycles. Many aerospace graduates work in adjacent industries, and that is normal rather than a failure.
What you need to get in
By school system. Requirements are set by individual universities and change — confirm on the course page for the year you apply.
Saudi curriculum track
requiredمسار علوم الحاسب والهندسة — Computer Science and Engineering
The engineering track. Aerospace programmes are fewer in the Kingdom than mechanical or electrical ones, so the realistic route is often mechanical engineering with an aerospace specialisation or a master's abroad.
A-Level
requiredMathematics · Physics
helpsFurther Mathematics
Further Mathematics is more commonly expected here than in other engineering disciplines, and is required at some selective universities.
IB Diploma
requiredMathematics: Analysis and Approaches HL · Physics HL
helpsDesign Technology
AA HL specifically. Aerospace departments are among the strictest about this.
Advanced Placement
helpsAP Calculus BC · AP Physics C: Mechanics · AP Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism
Calculus BC and Physics C are the combination that matches the first year of this degree.
IGCSE
Extended-tier mathematics and separate-science physics, with Additional Mathematics strongly advised.
Tests and other gates
- ESAT or PATOctober
Required at Cambridge, Imperial and Oxford for engineering; not required at most universities.
- Qudurat and TahsiliGrade 11 and 12
The Saudi engineering composite.
- Security clearanceAt employment, not admission
Much aerospace work is defence-related and gated on nationality and clearance rather than on qualifications. Worth knowing which employers that opens and closes.
What closes this door
- Without mathematics and physics at A-Level or HL, this is closed everywhere.
- Defence and space work is frequently restricted by nationality and clearance, which no academic preparation changes.
Where it leads
Careers written up on this site, and the reason each one follows from this degree.
- Aerospace Engineer
The direct destination — aircraft, propulsion, space systems and defence.
- Defence Systems Engineer
Where a large share of aerospace graduates actually work, and a Saudi localisation priority.
- Mechanical Engineer
The broader field this specialises, and a common and entirely normal destination.
- Airline Pilot
A different route into the same industry, reached without this degree but often chosen alongside interest in it.
- Aircraft Maintenance Engineer
The licensed, hands-on side of aviation engineering.
- Renewable Energy Engineer
Wind turbine aerodynamics is the same physics applied to a different rotor.
- Physicist
For those who find the underlying fluid and structural physics more interesting than the aircraft.
And, without a page here yet
- Airline and MRO engineering
- Space systems and satellites
- Defence primes and systems integration
- Computational fluid dynamics and simulation across industries
- Motorsport and high-performance automotive
What it is not
- That it is a better mechanical engineering. It is a narrower one; mechanical graduates can enter aerospace, and aerospace graduates entering other industries sometimes have to explain themselves.
- That the space sector is large. It is small, concentrated, and mostly closed to those without the right nationality and clearance.
- That it means designing whole aircraft. Almost nobody does. You will own a component, a subsystem or an analysis, for years.
In Saudi Arabia
The aviation and defence localisation programmes are creating aerospace work here that did not exist a decade ago — maintenance and MRO capability, defence manufacturing under the localisation target, and the airline expansion tied to new carriers and airports. It remains a smaller field than mechanical or electrical engineering, and Saudi aerospace-specific degree programmes are limited, so a common route is mechanical engineering here plus an aerospace master's abroad. Council registration applies as it does to all engineering practice.
Consider instead
Same interest, different trade-off — the most useful section on this page and the easiest to skip.
- Mechanical EngineeringThe parent discipline: broader, far more employers, and the safer choice if you are unsure.
- Electrical and Electronic EngineeringAvionics and control systems, which are a growing share of every aircraft.
- PhysicsThe underlying science, if fluid dynamics and structures interest you more than certification does.
- Computer ScienceSimulation, autonomy and flight software — a large and growing part of aerospace work.
The parts that go out of date
Entry requirements are the fastest-moving information on this site. These are the statements most likely to have changed.
- Defence and space employment is gated by clearance and nationality rules that change with policy.
- Saudi aerospace and defence localisation targets are ambitious and their timelines have moved.
Where this came from
Admission patterns stated by accredited aerospace engineering schools in the UK, the Gulf and the US, all of which name mathematics and physics. Saudi Council of Engineers registration governs practice.
