Engineering
Mechanical Engineering
The broadest engineering degree and the most transferable. Anything that moves, heats, cools or carries load is inside it, which is why it survives every shift in which industry is hiring.
- How long
- Four to five years, often including a preparatory or foundation year in the Kingdom and an industrial placement year elsewhere.
- Called
- BEng · MEng · BSc Mechanical Engineering · بكالوريوس الهندسة الميكانيكية
What you actually study
As opposed to what the name suggests.
- Mathematics for two solid years — calculus, differential equations, linear algebra — which is the part that filters people.
- Thermodynamics and fluid mechanics: energy, heat and flow, and the reason this degree opens the energy sector.
- Solid mechanics and materials — what a structure does under load, and when it fails.
- Design, manufacturing and CAD, plus a project where you build something and discover what tolerance means.
- Control and dynamics, which is where mechanical engineering meets electrical and robotics.
The hardest part
The second-year mathematics and thermodynamics wall. Students who arrived on a strong A-Level or IB HL mathematics grade generally clear it; students who scraped in do not, and the failure is almost always mathematical rather than conceptual. The other adjustment is that engineering is not physics: you are optimising against cost, manufacturability and time, and there is rarely one correct answer.
What you need to get in
By school system. Requirements are set by individual universities and change — confirm on the course page for the year you apply.
Saudi curriculum track
requiredمسار علوم الحاسب والهندسة — Computer Science and Engineering
The engineering track is the route, and physics and mathematics carry the composite. KFUPM and the engineering colleges also run English-medium instruction, so a preparatory year is common unless your English score clears the bar.
A-Level
requiredMathematics · Physics
helpsFurther Mathematics · Chemistry · Design and Technology
Maths and physics together are the near-universal requirement. Further Mathematics is a real advantage at the most selective universities and not usually required.
IB Diploma
requiredMathematics: Analysis and Approaches HL · Physics HL
helpsChemistry · Design Technology
Applications and Interpretation HL is accepted by fewer engineering departments than students expect, and the exceptions are not predictable from outside. AA HL is the safe choice.
Advanced Placement
helpsAP Calculus BC · AP Physics C: Mechanics · AP Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism · AP Chemistry
Physics C rather than Physics 1 — the calculus-based course is the one engineering programmes give credit for and the one that matches the first-year syllabus.
IGCSE
Extended-tier mathematics and separate-science physics. Additional Mathematics, where offered, is the single best preparation for what the degree assumes.
Tests and other gates
- ESAT or TMUAOctober of the application year
Required by Cambridge and Imperial for engineering; most other universities require nothing.
- PATOctober
Oxford's engineering, physics and materials test.
- Qudurat and TahsiliGrade 11 and 12
The Saudi admission composite; the Tahsili physics and mathematics components carry the most weight for engineering colleges.
- IELTS, TOEFL or STEPBefore enrolment
Decides whether you spend a preparatory year in English at KFUPM, KAUST or an engineering college — a full year, saved or spent.
What closes this door
- Without both mathematics and physics at A-Level or IB HL, accredited engineering is closed at almost every university.
- Foundation-tier IGCSE mathematics caps the grade and forecloses A-Level Mathematics, closing this two years early.
- A degree from an unaccredited programme can block Saudi Council of Engineers registration later — check accreditation before enrolling, not after.
Where it leads
Careers written up on this site, and the reason each one follows from this degree.
- Mechanical Engineer
The direct destination, across manufacturing, energy, HVAC, automotive and consulting.
- Aerospace Engineer
Aircraft and propulsion — the same fundamentals applied where weight is the binding constraint.
- Petroleum Engineer
One of the largest employers of mechanical graduates in the Kingdom.
- Renewable Energy Engineer
Wind, solar thermal and storage, all built on thermodynamics and mechanics.
- Biomedical Engineer
Devices and prosthetics, where mechanical design meets the human body.
- Chemical Engineer
Process plant work, where the two disciplines overlap heavily in practice.
- Management Consultant
A common and well-trodden exit — engineering degrees are read as evidence of structured problem solving.
- Regulatory Inspector
Safety, standards and plant inspection, where the engineering knowledge is the qualification.
And, without a page here yet
- Automotive, rail and heavy industry
- HVAC and building services engineering
- Manufacturing and production management
- Technical sales and project management
- Patent work and technical consulting
What it is not
- That you must know which engineering discipline you want at seventeen. The first year is largely common and transfers between disciplines are usually possible; the choice hardens in year two.
- That it is about building things by hand. Most mechanical engineers spend far more time on analysis, specification and documentation than on assembly.
- That it is a lesser choice than computer science. It is the most durable engineering degree there is, and its graduates are employed across more industries than any other.
In Saudi Arabia
Mechanical engineering is close to the default technical degree in the Kingdom for good reason: Aramco, SABIC, Ma'aden, the petrochemical complex, the utilities and the giga-project construction programmes all hire mechanical engineers in volume. Saudi Council of Engineers registration is required to practise, and accreditation of a foreign degree is the step that most often goes wrong — check it before enrolling. Saudization in engineering is substantial, and a nationally qualified engineer competes in a favourable market.
Consider instead
Same interest, different trade-off — the most useful section on this page and the easiest to skip.
- Electrical and Electronic EngineeringThe other half of most modern machines, with more demand in power, electronics and control.
- Civil EngineeringStructures and infrastructure rather than machines — the same mathematics, a different scale.
- Chemical EngineeringProcess and plant rather than mechanism, and the most direct route into petrochemicals.
- Aerospace EngineeringA specialisation of this degree, narrower and with fewer employers.
- PhysicsThe underlying science without the design constraints, if the theory is what interests you.
The parts that go out of date
Entry requirements are the fastest-moving information on this site. These are the statements most likely to have changed.
- Whether IB Maths Applications HL is accepted for engineering varies by department and changes.
- Saudi Council of Engineers accreditation lists for foreign programmes are updated and should be checked directly.
Where this came from
Admission patterns stated by accredited engineering schools in the UK, the Gulf and the US, all of which name mathematics and physics. Saudi Council of Engineers registration governs practice in the Kingdom.
Last checked 2026-09-06. The requirements above describe the pattern across universities, not any one of them — the course page for the year you apply is the only thing that is ever authoritative.
