Computing and mathematics

Computer Science

A mathematics degree about computation, not a coding course. The most popular technical degree in the world right now, which is both its strength and the reason its entry-level market is crowded.

How long
Three to four years in the UK, four to five in the Kingdom and the US, often with a placement year.
Called
BSc Computer Science · BEng Software Engineering · BS Computer Science · بكالوريوس علوم الحاسب

What you actually study

As opposed to what the name suggests.

  • Programming, for perhaps the first year — after which it is assumed rather than taught.
  • Data structures and algorithms, which is the actual core of the degree and the basis of most technical interviews for a decade afterwards.
  • Discrete mathematics, logic and the theory of computation — what can be computed at all, and how expensively.
  • Systems: operating systems, networks, databases and computer architecture, which is where you learn what is happening underneath.
  • A specialism in the final years — machine learning, security, graphics, distributed systems — plus a substantial individual project.

The hardest part

The theory, and the surprise that this is a mathematics degree. Students who came for programming and expected four years of building often struggle with discrete mathematics, complexity and formal reasoning. The second difficulty is external: entry-level hiring contracted sharply while graduate numbers kept rising, so the first job now takes months rather than weeks. That is a market condition, not a verdict on you, and it is the single most important thing to know before choosing this degree today.

What you need to get in

By school system. Requirements are set by individual universities and change — confirm on the course page for the year you apply.

Saudi curriculum track

requiredمسار علوم الحاسب والهندسة — Computer Science and Engineering

The computing and engineering track, with mathematics carrying the composite. Note that the track's name mentions computing; the admission still turns on mathematics rather than on programming ability.

A-Level

requiredMathematics

helpsFurther Mathematics · Physics · Computer Science

Mathematics is what departments require. Computer Science A-Level is useful and is almost never a substitute for it — this is the most common mistake made at sixteen by people who want this degree.

IB Diploma

requiredMathematics: Analysis and Approaches HL

helpsPhysics HL · Computer Science

AA HL is named by selective departments. Maths AI HL is accepted at some and not others, and the list is not predictable from outside.

Advanced Placement

helpsAP Calculus BC · AP Computer Science A · AP Statistics · AP Physics C: Mechanics

Computer Science A rather than Principles if you intend to study computing; Principles is a literacy course and is read as one.

IGCSE

Extended-tier mathematics is the requirement that matters. Computer Science IGCSE is useful mostly because it tells you at fifteen whether you actually enjoy programming, which is worth more than the grade.

Tests and other gates

  • TMUAOctober

Required or advantageous at Cambridge, Imperial, Warwick and others — and now carries Oxford's computer science admissions since the MAT was retired from 2026 entry.

  • Qudurat and TahsiliGrade 11 and 12

The Saudi composite for computing colleges.

  • SAT or ACTGrade 11 to early Grade 12

For US applications, where computer science is among the most competitive majors to be admitted directly into.

What closes this door

  • Without A-Level or IB HL mathematics, computer science is closed at most selective universities — including at many that will happily accept you without ever having programmed.
  • Foundation-tier IGCSE mathematics forecloses A-Level Mathematics and therefore this degree.

Where it leads

Careers written up on this site, and the reason each one follows from this degree.

  • Software Engineer

The largest destination by a very wide margin.

  • Machine Learning Engineer

Models in production, usually reached after a few years in software or with a master's.

  • Data Engineer

The data platforms everything else runs on — better market, less competition.

  • Data Scientist

Analysis and decisions rather than systems.

  • Security Operations Analyst

Defending systems, with demand that has grown steadily and is not tied to a hiring cycle.

  • Quantitative Analyst

Finance, for the mathematically strongest — and among the best-paid destinations from this degree.

  • UX Designer

For people who discover they care more about the person using the software than the software.

  • Defence Systems Engineer

Software in defence and critical systems, a Saudi localisation priority.

And, without a page here yet

  • Product management and technical program management
  • DevOps, cloud and site reliability engineering
  • Games and graphics programming
  • Research, via a master's or doctorate
  • Founding a company, which this degree makes unusually cheap to attempt

What it is not

  • That it teaches you to be a programmer. It teaches computation; the employable programming is substantially self-taught and project-based, which is why portfolios matter so much here.
  • That the degree guarantees a job. It did, recently. It does not currently at the entry level, and anyone telling a fifteen-year-old otherwise is repeating advice from 2021.
  • That AI is ending the field. It has changed the daily task mix substantially and has not removed the need for people who can judge whether a system is correct — but it is a real reason for caution about the junior market specifically.

In Saudi Arabia

Demand in the Kingdom is genuinely strong and the shape is the same as everywhere: employers compete for experienced engineers and graduates compete for first roles. Banks, telecoms, government digital programmes, the sovereign technology and AI investments and the giga-projects are all hiring. There is no licence, no professional body and no foreign-degree recognition process — which makes this one of the very few fields where studying abroad carries no regulatory risk on return, and one where a strong portfolio genuinely substitutes for institutional prestige.

Same interest, different trade-off — the most useful section on this page and the easiest to skip.

The parts that go out of date

Entry requirements are the fastest-moving information on this site. These are the statements most likely to have changed.

  • Entry-level hiring conditions have changed sharply within a few years and may change again in either direction.
  • Whether IB Maths AI HL is accepted varies by department.
  • Oxford's move from the MAT to the TMUA took effect for 2026 entry and older guidance has not caught up.

Where this came from

Admission patterns stated by computer science departments in the UK, the Gulf and the US, which name mathematics far more often than they name computer science. Employment patterns reasoned from practitioner and hiring accounts.

Last checked 2026-09-06. The requirements above describe the pattern across universities, not any one of them — the course page for the year you apply is the only thing that is ever authoritative.
