Computing and mathematics
Data Science and Artificial Intelligence
Statistics, computing and a domain, in one degree. Newer than the jobs it points at, which means the quality varies more between universities than in any other subject here.
- How long
- Three to four years in the UK, four to five in the Kingdom and the US.
- Called
- BSc Data Science · BSc Artificial Intelligence · BSc Computer Science with Data Science · بكالوريوس علم البيانات
What you actually study
As opposed to what the name suggests.
- Probability and statistics, seriously — this is the half that distinguishes the degree from computer science and the half students underestimate.
- Linear algebra and calculus, which are what machine learning actually is underneath the libraries.
- Programming, data handling and databases, including the unglamorous work of cleaning data that nobody advertises.
- Machine learning: models, evaluation, and the discipline of not believing a result too early.
- Ethics, bias and interpretation — plus, at the better programmes, a real applied domain rather than toy datasets.
The hardest part
The statistics, and the discipline of scepticism. It is easy to produce a model that appears to work and hard to establish that it does; the degree that teaches only the tools produces graduates who cannot tell the difference. The other difficulty is choosing the programme: this is a young degree title and the range in rigour between universities offering it is wider than in any established subject. A computer science or statistics degree with a data specialism is often the safer purchase.
What you need to get in
By school system. Requirements are set by individual universities and change — confirm on the course page for the year you apply.
Saudi curriculum track
requiredمسار علوم الحاسب والهندسة — Computer Science and Engineering
The computing and engineering track. Mathematics carries the composite, and the mathematics matters more here than the computing does.
A-Level
requiredMathematics
helpsFurther Mathematics · Physics · Computer Science · Economics
Mathematics is universally required and Further Mathematics is a real advantage — more so than for general computer science, because the statistical content is heavier.
IB Diploma
requiredMathematics: Analysis and Approaches HL
helpsComputer Science · Physics HL · Economics HL
AA HL. Applications and Interpretation HL is the statistics-flavoured course and is nonetheless accepted by fewer of these departments, which is counter-intuitive and true.
Advanced Placement
helpsAP Calculus BC · AP Statistics · AP Computer Science A
AP Statistics is unusually relevant here and is the one most students in this direction skip.
IGCSE
Extended-tier mathematics, and Additional Mathematics where offered. Computer Science IGCSE is useful for finding out early whether you like programming.
Tests and other gates
- TMUAOctober
Required or advantageous at several UK universities for mathematical computing and economics courses.
- Qudurat and TahsiliGrade 11 and 12
The Saudi admission composite.
- SAT or ACTGrade 11 to early Grade 12
For US applications; the mathematics section is read specifically for quantitative majors.
What closes this door
- Without A-Level or IB HL mathematics, this degree is closed at any programme worth taking.
- A programme without a serious statistics core will close the research and quantitative routes later without ever telling you it has. Read the module list before applying.
Where it leads
Careers written up on this site, and the reason each one follows from this degree.
- Data Scientist
The named destination, though the job is more communication and data cleaning than the degree suggests.
- Machine Learning Engineer
Models in production, which is closer to software engineering than to research.
- Data Engineer
The pipelines underneath — less contested, similarly paid, and consistently in demand.
- Quantitative Analyst
Finance, for the mathematically strongest.
- Statistician
Rigour over speed, in health, government or research.
- Actuary
The same statistics with a protected professional qualification and far more security.
- Epidemiologist
Health data at population scale, usually via a master's.
- Security Operations Analyst
Detection and anomaly work, where the statistics is the useful half.
And, without a page here yet
- Business intelligence and analytics
- Product analytics and experimentation
- Operations research and optimisation
- Research, via a master's or doctorate
- Government and national statistics work
What it is not
- That the job is building models. Practitioners consistently describe modelling as roughly a fifth of the work; the rest is finding, cleaning and reconciling data, and explaining results.
- That the title guarantees the job. Data science is one of the most oversubscribed entry markets in technology, while data engineering next door is not.
- That any degree with 'AI' in the name is equivalent. The range in statistical rigour between programmes is enormous, and it decides which doors stay open.
In Saudi Arabia
National data and AI strategy is one of the more concretely funded parts of Vision 2030, with sovereign compute investment, government data programmes and a well-established national authority for data and AI. The demand is real — and it follows the same sequence everywhere: organisations need data infrastructure before they need data scientists, and many here discovered that in the wrong order. Which means a graduate who can also engineer data is in a materially stronger position than one who can only model.
Consider instead
Same interest, different trade-off — the most useful section on this page and the easiest to skip.
- Computer ScienceThe broader and better-established degree, with more destinations and clearer employer recognition.
- StatisticsThe rigorous half on its own, in a far less crowded market and with more durable skills.
- MathematicsThe foundation, which keeps every quantitative route open including this one.
- EconomicsData applied to markets and policy, with more writing and argument.
The parts that go out of date
Entry requirements are the fastest-moving information on this site. These are the statements most likely to have changed.
- This degree title is young and programme quality varies widely; module lists change year to year.
- Entry-level demand for data science specifically has been more volatile than for adjacent engineering roles.
Where this came from
Admission patterns stated by data science and AI programmes in the UK, the Gulf and the US, which name mathematics and increasingly further mathematics. Employment patterns reasoned from practitioner and hiring accounts.
