Computing and mathematics

Mathematics

The degree that keeps the most doors open per year spent. Also the one where school mathematics and university mathematics turn out to be different subjects.

How long
Three years in the UK, four in the Kingdom and the US; four-year integrated master's routes are common.
Called
BSc Mathematics · MMath · BA Mathematics · بكالوريوس الرياضيات

What you actually study

As opposed to what the name suggests.

  • Analysis — the rigorous foundations of calculus, and the course where most students first meet real proof.
  • Linear algebra and abstract algebra: structure rather than calculation.
  • Probability and statistics, which is what most mathematics graduates end up using professionally.
  • Applied strands — differential equations, numerical methods, mechanics, optimisation.
  • In the later years, a genuine choice: pure, applied, statistical or computational, and they lead to different places.

The hardest part

The transition from computation to proof, usually in the first term. School mathematics rewards executing a method correctly; university mathematics asks you to establish that something is true, and there is no method. A substantial number of students who found A-Level Mathematics easy find this difficult, and it is not a sign they chose wrongly — it is the subject actually beginning.

What you need to get in

By school system. Requirements are set by individual universities and change — confirm on the course page for the year you apply.

Saudi curriculum track

requiredمسار علوم الحاسب والهندسة — Computer Science and Engineering

The engineering and computing track. Mathematics is a smaller degree in the Kingdom than engineering, and it is the natural feeder for statistics, actuarial work, teaching and quantitative finance.

A-Level

requiredMathematics

helpsFurther Mathematics · Physics

Further Mathematics is required at Cambridge, Imperial, Warwick and their equivalents, and strongly preferred nearly everywhere else. If your school offers it and you want this degree, take it.

IB Diploma

requiredMathematics: Analysis and Approaches HL

helpsPhysics HL

AA HL at 6 or 7 is the standard requirement, and Applications and Interpretation is rarely accepted for a mathematics degree.

Advanced Placement

helpsAP Calculus BC · AP Statistics · AP Physics C: Mechanics · AP Computer Science A

Calculus BC is the minimum serious preparation; most strong applicants have gone beyond it by the time they arrive.

IGCSE

Extended-tier mathematics and, where offered, Additional Mathematics — which is the closest thing to a preview of what this degree feels like.

Tests and other gates

  • TMUAOctober

Required or advantageous at Cambridge, Imperial, Warwick, LSE and Durham — and now Oxford, which retired the MAT from 2026 entry.

  • STEPJune, alongside A-Levels

Usually an offer condition at Cambridge and Warwick rather than a shortlisting test. Genuinely hard; begin a year early.

  • Qudurat and TahsiliGrade 11 and 12

    The Saudi admission composite.

What closes this door

  • Without A-Level or IB HL mathematics this degree is closed, and without Further Mathematics the most selective universities are effectively closed too.
  • Foundation-tier IGCSE mathematics closes the whole route at fifteen.

Where it leads

Careers written up on this site, and the reason each one follows from this degree.

  • Actuary

Among the most direct destinations: professional exams, a protected qualification and unusual job security.

  • Quantitative Analyst

The best-paid destination, and the one that most often wants a master's or doctorate.

  • Data Scientist

A very common industry route, and mathematics graduates arrive better equipped than most.

  • Statistician

Rigour about evidence, usually via a master's, in health, government or research.

  • Software Engineer

Employers treat a mathematics degree as evidence of the reasoning ability programming requires.

  • Economist

Modern economics is mathematics applied to human behaviour, and this is a strong entry to it.

  • Secondary School Teacher

Mathematics teachers are in shortage in almost every country, which makes this a genuinely reliable route.

  • Physicist

Theoretical physics is reachable from mathematics, usually through a master's.

And, without a page here yet

  • Cryptography and security research
  • Operations research and logistics optimisation
  • Finance: trading, risk and structuring
  • Academic research and doctoral study
  • Government statistical and analytical services

What it is not

  • That it is only useful for teaching or academia. Mathematics graduates are employed across finance, technology, government and consulting, and the degree signals reasoning ability more strongly than almost any other.
  • That being fast at school mathematics predicts success. Proof rewards patience and stubbornness rather than speed.
  • That it is impractical. It closes fewer doors than any degree on this page, which is the most practical property a degree can have at eighteen.

In Saudi Arabia

Mathematics is a smaller degree here than engineering and, for that reason, a less contested one. The destinations that matter locally are teaching — where shortage is real and persistent — actuarial and analytical work in the banking and insurance sector, and the analytical roles inside government statistical and data institutions. There is no licence and no recognition barrier for studying abroad, so postgraduate study overseas is straightforward to return from.

The parts that go out of date

Entry requirements are the fastest-moving information on this site. These are the statements most likely to have changed.

  • Whether Further Mathematics is required or merely preferred is stated per course and changes.
  • Oxford's move from the MAT to the TMUA took effect for 2026 entry; older advice still names the MAT.

Where this came from

Admission patterns stated by mathematics departments in the UK, the Gulf and the US, which name mathematics and frequently further mathematics or an admissions test. Destination patterns reasoned from where mathematics graduates are consistently reported to go.

Last checked 2026-09-06. The requirements above describe the pattern across universities, not any one of them — the course page for the year you apply is the only thing that is ever authoritative.
