Biology and Biomedical Science

The most popular science degree and the one with the widest gap between what students expect and what happens after. Excellent as a foundation; weak as a plan on its own.

How long
Three to four years, with a laboratory or research year common and worth taking.
Called
BSc Biology · BSc Biomedical Science · BSc Molecular Biology · بكالوريوس الأحياء· بكالوريوس العلوم الطبية التطبيقية

What you actually study

As opposed to what the name suggests.

  • Cell and molecular biology, genetics and biochemistry — the foundation everything else in the degree is built on.
  • Physiology and microbiology, and in biomedical science the mechanisms of disease specifically.
  • Statistics and experimental design, which is the most professionally useful part of the degree and the part most students treat as an obstacle.
  • Laboratory technique — culture, assays, sequencing, analysis — which is what employers actually hire on.
  • In the final year, a specialism and a research project, and this is where the degree either becomes a direction or does not.

The hardest part

Not the coursework, which is broad rather than deep, but the transition afterwards. A biology bachelor's alone is a weak position in a competitive market: the research route needs a doctorate, the clinical routes need separate qualifications, and the industry routes want laboratory or data skills the degree only partly gives. The students who do well are the ones who add something — a research year, statistics, programming, or a specific technique — during the degree rather than after it.

What you need to get in

By school system. Requirements are set by individual universities and change — confirm on the course page for the year you apply.

Saudi curriculum track

requiredمسار الصحة والحياة — Health and Life Sciences

The health and life sciences track. Note that applied medical sciences programmes at Saudi universities are often a better-defined route than general biology, because they attach to a licensed clinical profession.

A-Level

requiredBiology

helpsChemistry · Mathematics · Psychology

Chemistry is required by a large share of biology and nearly all biomedical science departments — it is the requirement people miss, because the degree is called biology.

IB Diploma

requiredBiology HL

helpsChemistry HL · Mathematics SL or above

HL biology, usually with chemistry at HL or SL depending on the department.

Advanced Placement

helpsAP Biology · AP Chemistry · AP Statistics · AP Psychology

AP Statistics is the underrated one: biology is a statistical science and most students arrive without any.

IGCSE

Separate sciences, particularly biology and chemistry. Mathematics matters more than students expect, because the degree is more quantitative than its reputation.

Tests and other gates

  • ESATOctober

Cambridge natural sciences; most universities require no test for biology.

  • Qudurat and TahsiliGrade 11 and 12

The Saudi admission composite for science and health colleges.

What closes this door

  • Without biology at A-Level or HL this is closed, and without chemistry alongside it a large share of programmes are closed too.
  • Combined Science at IGCSE frequently blocks both A-Level sciences and therefore this degree.

Where it leads

Careers written up on this site, and the reason each one follows from this degree.

  • Epidemiologist

Disease at population scale, usually via a master's in public health — one of the strongest routes from this degree.

  • Pharmaceutical Scientist

Drug discovery and development, where biology and chemistry graduates work side by side.

  • Data Scientist

Bioinformatics and health data, if programming and statistics are added during the degree.

  • Regulatory Inspector

Food safety, biosafety and health product regulation.

  • Secondary School Teacher

A real and respectable destination, and biology teachers are in demand.

  • Policy Analyst

Science and health policy, where the scientific literacy is the qualification.

  • Physiotherapist

Not directly, and one of several clinical routes reachable with a further professional degree.

And, without a page here yet

  • Doctoral research and academia
  • Biotechnology and genomics industry
  • Clinical trials and medical affairs
  • Graduate-entry medicine and dentistry, in systems that offer it
  • Science communication and publishing
  • Conservation and environmental work

What it is not

  • That it is the route to medicine. It is a route to graduate-entry medicine where that exists, and it is not a back door into an undergraduate medical degree.
  • That a bachelor's is enough. For research it is not, and for most well-paid industry roles it needs a specific skill attached — this is the degree where what you add matters most.
  • That biomedical science and medicine overlap heavily in career terms. They share content and lead to entirely different professions.

In Saudi Arabia

Applied medical sciences programmes — laboratory science, radiography, respiratory therapy — are often a better-defined route in the Kingdom than general biology, because each attaches to an SCFHS-classified profession with a licence and a defined scope. General biology graduates find their strongest destinations in teaching, laboratory work in the health system, the growing pharmaceutical and biotechnology localisation programmes, and postgraduate study. The research base is concentrated at KAUST and the university hospitals.

Same interest, different trade-off — the most useful section on this page and the easiest to skip.

The parts that go out of date

Entry requirements are the fastest-moving information on this site. These are the statements most likely to have changed.

  • Whether chemistry is required alongside biology varies by department and is frequently misread.
  • Graduate-entry medicine routes exist in some countries and not others, and the rules change.

Where this came from

Admission patterns stated by biology and biomedical science departments in the UK, the Gulf and the US. Destination patterns reasoned from consistently reported life sciences graduate outcomes.
