Medicine and health

Pharmacy

The chemistry of medicines and what they do to people. Five years, a licence, and a much wider range of destinations than the pharmacy counter suggests.

How long
Four to six years depending on the country, plus a pre-registration or internship year before licensure.

What you actually study

As opposed to what the name suggests.

  • Pharmaceutical chemistry — how a molecule is built, why it is stable, and what it becomes in the body.
  • Pharmacology: what drugs do, how they interact, and which combinations are dangerous. This is the core of the degree.
  • Pharmaceutics and formulation — turning an active compound into something that can actually be swallowed, injected or absorbed.
  • Clinical pharmacy, increasingly the emphasis: reviewing therapy on a ward, adjusting doses, and being the person who notices the interaction nobody else did.
  • Law, ethics and practice management, because dispensing is a regulated act with legal consequences.

The hardest part

The memorisation load is closer to medicine's than students expect, and the degree is more chemistry-heavy than the clinical image suggests. The other difficulty is professional rather than academic: much of community pharmacy is high-volume, commercially pressured work, and the gap between the clinical role taught at university and the retail role widely available afterwards is the most common source of disappointment in this profession.

What you need to get in

By school system. Requirements are set by individual universities and change — confirm on the course page for the year you apply.

Saudi curriculum track

requiredمسار الصحة والحياة — Health and Life Sciences

Admitted on the same composite as the other health colleges, generally below medicine and dentistry, which makes it a realistic destination for strong science students who do not clear the medicine threshold — and a genuinely good one rather than a consolation.

A-Level

requiredChemistry

helpsBiology · Mathematics · Physics

Chemistry is universally required. Biology is asked for by many schools and recommended everywhere; a second science or mathematics usually completes the set.

IB Diploma

requiredChemistry HL

helpsBiology HL · Mathematics SL or above

HL chemistry is the requirement that appears in nearly every offer. Typical offers sit around 32–36 points.

Advanced Placement

helpsAP Chemistry · AP Biology · AP Calculus AB · AP Statistics

The US PharmD is usually entered after two or more years of undergraduate prerequisites, so these feed that stage.

IGCSE

Separate sciences, particularly chemistry, plus solid mathematics — dose calculation is examined throughout the degree and getting it wrong has consequences.

Tests and other gates

  • Tahsili (science)End of Grade 12

Required for Saudi health-college admission, with chemistry heavily weighted.

  • QuduratFrom Grade 11

Part of the admission composite for every applicant.

  • PCAT or programme-specific testsDuring a US bachelor's

Requirements vary by PharmD programme and several have dropped standardised testing.

What closes this door

  • Without chemistry at A-Level or HL, pharmacy is closed everywhere.
  • Combined Science at IGCSE frequently blocks A-Level chemistry and with it this degree.

Where it leads

Careers written up on this site, and the reason each one follows from this degree.

  • Pharmacist

The licensed destination the degree is built for, in community, hospital or industry settings.

  • Pharmaceutical Scientist

Drug discovery and development — the research side of the same chemistry.

  • Regulatory Inspector

Medicines regulation and inspection, where the qualification is close to a prerequisite.

  • Clinical Psychologist

Not a direct route, and a reminder that health degrees converge: medicines and behaviour meet in mental health practice.

  • Epidemiologist

Pharmacoepidemiology — studying what medicines do across whole populations rather than one patient.

  • Compliance Officer

Pharmaceutical compliance and quality assurance, a large and well-paid employer of pharmacy graduates.

And, without a page here yet

  • Hospital and clinical pharmacy specialisation
  • Pharmaceutical industry: medical affairs, regulatory affairs, quality control
  • Drug information and poisons services
  • Clinical trials and pharmacovigilance
  • Community pharmacy ownership

What it is not

  • That it is retail work. Hospital, clinical, industrial and regulatory pharmacy are all substantial employers, and several pay better than the counter.
  • That it is an easier medicine. The chemistry is harder than medicine's and the pharmacology is deeper; what is shorter is the training, not the difficulty.
  • That automation is ending it. Dispensing is being automated; deciding whether a prescription is correct, safe and appropriate is not.

In Saudi Arabia

Pharmacy is a strong option in the Kingdom for two reasons students rarely weigh. First, SCFHS licensure makes it a protected profession with clear classification levels. Second, the domestic pharmaceutical manufacturing sector is an explicit localisation target, which is creating industrial and regulatory roles that did not exist a decade ago — and those pay better than community pharmacy. Saudization in pharmacy is significant, and a licensed Saudi pharmacist is in a strong position.

The parts that go out of date

Entry requirements are the fastest-moving information on this site. These are the statements most likely to have changed.

  • Whether biology is required alongside chemistry differs by school and changes.
  • US PharmD admission tests have been dropped by a number of programmes and the picture is still moving.

Where this came from

Admission patterns stated by UK and Saudi pharmacy schools, and the structure of PharmD programmes in the Gulf and the US. Individual courses vary and must be checked directly.

Last checked 2026-09-06. The requirements above describe the pattern across universities, not any one of them — the course page for the year you apply is the only thing that is ever authoritative.
