Sciences
Environmental Science
A genuinely interdisciplinary science about systems under pressure — water, climate, contamination, ecosystems. Rigorous where it is taught as a science, and thin where it is taught as an attitude.
- How long
- Three to four years, usually with fieldwork and often a placement.
- Called
- BSc Environmental Science · BSc Environmental Management · BSc Sustainability · بكالوريوس العلوم البيئية
What you actually study
As opposed to what the name suggests.
- Chemistry and biology applied to systems: what a pollutant does in soil, water and living things.
- Hydrology, climate and atmospheric science — the physical processes that move things around.
- Ecology and biodiversity, and how disturbance propagates through a system.
- Monitoring, sampling and statistics, which is what the working job mostly consists of.
- Policy, regulation and impact assessment, because environmental work is legally structured and that structure is the job.
The hardest part
Choosing a programme with real science in it. This subject title covers everything from a hard chemistry-and-hydrology degree to a policy course with a science label, and the difference decides which jobs you can hold. The second difficulty is professional: environmental roles are often project-based consulting with tight budgets, and the gap between wanting to protect an environment and writing impact assessments for a developer is a real adjustment.
What you need to get in
By school system. Requirements are set by individual universities and change — confirm on the course page for the year you apply.
Saudi curriculum track
requiredمسار الصحة والحياة or مسار علوم الحاسب والهندسة
Either science-side track. Domestically this connects to water, environmental regulation and the sustainability functions of the energy and giga-project sector.
A-Level
helpsBiology · Chemistry · Geography · Mathematics · Physics
Most departments ask for one or two sciences, with chemistry and biology the most commonly named. Geography is accepted widely and is genuinely relevant.
IB Diploma
helpsBiology HL · Chemistry HL · Geography HL · Environmental Systems and Societies
ESS counts as a Group 3 or Group 4 subject and is a natural companion — though most departments want a mainstream science alongside it.
Advanced Placement
helpsAP Environmental Science · AP Biology · AP Chemistry · AP Statistics · AP Human Geography
AP Environmental Science is directly aligned, and universities read it as the lighter science — pair it with biology or chemistry.
IGCSE
Separate sciences plus geography. Environmental Management IGCSE, where offered, is useful and is not a substitute for a mainstream science.
Tests and other gates
- Qudurat and TahsiliGrade 11 and 12
The Saudi admission composite for science colleges.
- No admissions test for most coursesNot applicable
Environmental science rarely requires a subject admissions test anywhere, which makes this one of the least administratively demanding science applications.
What closes this door
- A programme with no laboratory or quantitative content closes the technical consulting and regulatory routes without saying so. Read the module list.
- Without at least one mainstream science at A-Level or HL, the more rigorous programmes are closed.
Where it leads
Careers written up on this site, and the reason each one follows from this degree.
- Renewable Energy Engineer
Not a direct route, and environmental scientists work alongside them on siting, assessment and compliance throughout the energy transition.
- Regulatory Inspector
Environmental regulation, monitoring and enforcement — a core public-sector destination.
- Geologist
Contaminated land, groundwater and ground investigation, where the two disciplines overlap directly.
- Epidemiologist
Environmental health — exposure, air quality and their population consequences.
- Policy Analyst
Climate, water and environmental policy, an expanding field in the Kingdom specifically.
- Management Consultant
Sustainability and ESG advisory, currently one of the faster-growing consulting practices.
- Compliance Officer
Environmental compliance inside industrial companies, which is where much of the paid work is.
And, without a page here yet
- Environmental consulting and impact assessment
- Water resources and desalination management
- Corporate sustainability and reporting
- Conservation and protected area management
- Climate modelling and research, via postgraduate study
What it is not
- That the work is conservation. Most paid environmental work is compliance, assessment and monitoring for industry and government, and it is useful precisely because it is not activism.
- That the degree is soft. The rigorous versions are chemistry, hydrology and statistics; the reputational problem comes from the programmes that are not.
- That sustainability roles are plentiful and well paid. Demand is growing genuinely and from a small base, and the entry-level market is competitive.
In Saudi Arabia
Water is the defining environmental question in the Kingdom, and desalination, groundwater depletion and water management are technical fields with real employment. Beyond that, environmental impact assessment is a legal requirement for the giga-projects and industrial expansion, which creates consulting demand; the National Center for Environmental Compliance and the regulatory bodies employ directly; and the emissions and carbon commitments attached to Vision 2030 are creating corporate roles that did not exist a decade ago. This is a field where the Kingdom's needs are unusually concrete.

The parts that go out of date
Entry requirements are the fastest-moving information on this site. These are the statements most likely to have changed.
- Programme content under this title varies enormously between universities; check the modules rather than the name.
- Environmental regulation in the Kingdom is being built out quickly, and requirements and institutions have changed within the last few years.
Where this came from
Admission patterns stated by environmental science departments in the UK, the Gulf and the US, which typically require one or two sciences. Destination patterns reasoned from the structure of the consulting, regulatory and energy sectors.
Last checked 2026-09-06. The requirements above describe the pattern across universities, not any one of them — the course page for the year you apply is the only thing that is ever authoritative.
