Chemistry

The science that sits between physics and biology and underwrites both. The most laboratory-intensive science degree, and the one whose graduates are hired for what their hands can do as much as what they know.

How long
Three to four years, with four-year integrated master's routes standard for research-bound students in the UK.
Called
BSc Chemistry · MChem · MSci · بكالوريوس الكيمياء

What you actually study

As opposed to what the name suggests.

  • Organic chemistry — structure, mechanism and synthesis, which is the part that separates people who love this subject from people who tolerated it.
  • Physical chemistry: thermodynamics, kinetics and quantum chemistry, and the reason mathematics is required.
  • Inorganic and materials chemistry, from catalysis to solid-state materials.
  • Analytical chemistry and spectroscopy — how you establish what a substance actually is.
  • Laboratory work, continuously, and far more of it than any other science degree demands.

The hardest part

The laboratory hours. Chemistry students spend entire days in the lab in addition to lectures and problem sets, and the practical work is assessed. Academically, physical chemistry surprises people who chose the subject for organic mechanism and did not expect quantum mechanics. The career difficulty is that pure chemistry roles are fewer than graduates, and the strongest destinations often require a master's or doctorate.

What you need to get in

By school system. Requirements are set by individual universities and change — confirm on the course page for the year you apply.

Saudi curriculum track

requiredمسار الصحة والحياة or مسار علوم الحاسب والهندسة

Either science-side track supports chemistry. The health and life sciences track is the more common route domestically, and the engineering track suits students who may switch towards chemical engineering.

A-Level

requiredChemistry

helpsMathematics · Physics · Biology

Chemistry is obviously required; mathematics is required by a good number of departments and assumed by nearly all of them, because physical chemistry is mathematical.

IB Diploma

requiredChemistry HL

helpsMathematics: Analysis and Approaches HL or SL · Physics HL · Biology HL

HL chemistry at 6 or above is the standard offer, with mathematics at least at SL.

Advanced Placement

helpsAP Chemistry · AP Calculus AB or BC · AP Physics 1 · AP Biology

AP Chemistry is the relevant one and among the hardest AP exams; it earns credit at many universities.

IGCSE

Separate-science chemistry and Extended-tier mathematics. Combined Science frequently blocks A-Level chemistry, which closes this route.

Tests and other gates

  • ESATOctober

Cambridge natural sciences and Imperial require it; most universities do not.

  • Qudurat and TahsiliGrade 11 and 12

The Saudi admission composite, with the Tahsili chemistry component directly relevant.

What closes this door

  • Without A-Level or IB HL chemistry this degree is closed, and so is every professional route that runs through it.
  • Combined Science at IGCSE is the most common way this door shuts before anyone chooses to shut it.

Where it leads

Careers written up on this site, and the reason each one follows from this degree.

  • Pharmaceutical Scientist

Drug discovery and development — the largest science destination for chemistry graduates.

  • Chemical Engineer

Reachable with a conversion master's, and the two disciplines work side by side in industry.

  • Pharmacist

Not a direct route, and the chemistry overlap is close enough that people move in both directions via further study.

  • Regulatory Inspector

Chemical, environmental and product safety regulation, where the science is the qualification.

  • Forensic Accountant

An unexpected neighbour: forensic science and analytical laboratories recruit chemistry graduates directly, and investigative work runs on the same instinct for evidence.

  • Secondary School Teacher

Chemistry teaching is in shortage in most countries, including here.

  • Geologist

Geochemistry and materials analysis in the energy and mining sectors.

And, without a page here yet

  • Petrochemical and materials industry laboratories
  • Quality control and analytical services
  • Forensic science
  • Cosmetics, food and consumer product development
  • Academic research, via a doctorate
  • Patent law, with a further qualification

What it is not

  • That it is the safe route to medicine if you miss out. It is a good degree and it does not lead to medicine without a graduate-entry programme, which is competitive in its own right.
  • That chemistry and chemical engineering are the same. One studies molecules, the other studies the plant around them, and the daily work is entirely different.
  • That the laboratory is optional. It is the degree's defining feature, and students who dislike practical work are usually unhappy here.

In Saudi Arabia

Chemistry sits close to the centre of Saudi industry without usually being the job title. The petrochemical complex, SABIC's laboratories, Ma'aden, the water and desalination sector, and the growing pharmaceutical manufacturing programme all employ chemists in analytical, quality and development roles. The academic and research base is concentrated at KAUST, KFUPM and the universities. Chemistry teaching is a genuine shortage area domestically, and it is under-chosen relative to how well it pays and how stable it is.

The parts that go out of date

Entry requirements are the fastest-moving information on this site. These are the statements most likely to have changed.

  • Whether mathematics is formally required alongside chemistry varies by department.
  • Pharmaceutical and materials industry hiring in the Kingdom is tied to localisation programmes whose timelines move.

Where this came from

Admission patterns stated by chemistry departments in the UK, the Gulf and the US, which name chemistry and usually mathematics. Destination patterns reasoned from consistently reported chemistry graduate outcomes.
