Engineering
Chemical Engineering
Turning a reaction that works in a flask into a plant that runs it by the tonne, safely, for twenty years. The most directly relevant engineering degree in the Saudi economy.
- How long
- Four to five years, with a preparatory year common in the Kingdom and industrial placements widely available.
- Called
- BEng · MEng · BSc Chemical Engineering · بكالوريوس الهندسة الكيميائية
What you actually study
As opposed to what the name suggests.
- Mass and energy balances — the accounting of what goes in and what comes out, which underpins everything else.
- Thermodynamics and reaction engineering: what a reaction will do at scale, which is rarely what it does in a flask.
- Transport phenomena — heat, mass and momentum transfer, and the hardest sustained mathematics in the degree.
- Separation processes: distillation, extraction and the equipment that makes a mixture into products.
- Process control, plant design and, throughout, safety — this is the discipline where a design error kills people, and it is taught that way.
The hardest part
Transport phenomena in the middle years, which combines fluid mechanics, heat transfer and differential equations at once. The other adjustment is cultural rather than academic: chemical engineering is not chemistry. If you loved chemistry for the molecules, this degree spends most of its time on the equipment around them.
What you need to get in
By school system. Requirements are set by individual universities and change — confirm on the course page for the year you apply.
Saudi curriculum track
requiredمسار علوم الحاسب والهندسة — Computer Science and Engineering
The engineering track, with chemistry mattering more here than in any other engineering discipline. KFUPM and the engineering colleges feed directly into Aramco and SABIC from this degree.
A-Level
requiredMathematics · Chemistry
helpsPhysics · Further Mathematics
Chemistry and mathematics are the pair. Many departments also require or strongly prefer physics, so the safe combination is all three.
IB Diploma
requiredMathematics: Analysis and Approaches HL · Chemistry HL
helpsPhysics HL
HL chemistry is named in nearly every offer, alongside HL mathematics.
Advanced Placement
helpsAP Chemistry · AP Calculus BC · AP Physics C: Mechanics · AP Physics 1
AP Chemistry is the most relevant and among the hardest AP exams; it is also the one most likely to earn credit here.
IGCSE
Extended-tier mathematics with separate-science chemistry and physics. Combined Science is a common way this door closes without anyone noticing.
Tests and other gates
- ESATOctober
Cambridge and Imperial require it for chemical engineering; most universities do not.
- Qudurat and TahsiliGrade 11 and 12
The Saudi composite; the Tahsili chemistry component is weighted heavily here.
- IELTS, TOEFL or STEPBefore enrolment
Decides whether an English preparatory year is required at the engineering colleges.
What closes this door
- Without chemistry and mathematics at A-Level or HL, chemical engineering is closed everywhere.
- Combined Science at IGCSE frequently blocks A-Level chemistry and therefore this degree.
Where it leads
Careers written up on this site, and the reason each one follows from this degree.
- Chemical Engineer
The direct destination — process design, plant operations and production.
- Petroleum Engineer
The energy sector's other half; the two disciplines overlap and move between each other.
- Reservoir Engineer
Subsurface engineering, reachable from a chemical engineering foundation.
- Renewable Energy Engineer
Hydrogen, carbon capture and storage — the areas where the Kingdom's energy investment is moving.
- Pharmaceutical Scientist
Manufacturing medicines at scale, which is a chemical engineering problem.
- Regulatory Inspector
Process safety, environmental and industrial regulation.
- Management Consultant
Energy and industrial advisory, where process understanding is scarce among consultants.
And, without a page here yet
- Petrochemicals, refining and gas processing
- Water treatment and desalination — a major Saudi industry
- Food, cosmetics and consumer product manufacturing
- Hydrogen, carbon capture and energy transition projects
- Process safety and technical authority roles
What it is not
- That it is chemistry with more mathematics. It is engineering: equipment, scale, economics and safety, with chemistry as the input rather than the subject.
- That it locks you into oil. Water, food, pharmaceuticals, materials and the entire energy transition run on the same core, and the transition is creating chemical engineering jobs rather than removing them.
- That the plant work is dirty and remote. Much of the career is design office and control room; the site periods are real and finite.
In Saudi Arabia
No degree on this site maps more directly onto the Saudi economy. Aramco, SABIC, Ma'aden, the refineries, the desalination sector and the new hydrogen and carbon capture programmes are all chemical engineering employers, and KFUPM's pipeline into them is well established. That concentration is also the risk: the sector is dominant, and a career here is more exposed to it than a mechanical or electrical engineer's would be. Council registration is required, and accreditation of a foreign degree should be confirmed before enrolling.
Consider instead
Same interest, different trade-off — the most useful section on this page and the easiest to skip.
- ChemistryThe molecules themselves, in a laboratory rather than a plant, with research rather than production as the destination.
- Mechanical EngineeringBroader and less sector-concentrated, with heavy overlap in plant work.
- Petroleum EngineeringThe upstream half of the same industry — reservoirs and wells rather than process.
- Environmental ScienceEmissions, water and sustainability from the science side rather than the plant side.
The parts that go out of date
Entry requirements are the fastest-moving information on this site. These are the statements most likely to have changed.
- Whether physics is required alongside chemistry and mathematics varies by department.
- Energy transition investment is reshaping which sub-sectors hire, and the direction has moved faster than curricula have.
Where this came from
Admission patterns stated by accredited chemical engineering schools in the UK, the Gulf and the US, which name mathematics and chemistry and usually physics. Saudi Council of Engineers registration governs practice.
