Earth Sciences and Geology

The physical planet as a system, and the one science degree that routinely involves being outdoors. Tightly coupled to the energy and mining industries, which is both its advantage and its exposure.

How long
Three to four years, with fieldwork throughout and a mapping project that is often the defining piece of work.

What you actually study

As opposed to what the name suggests.

  • Mineralogy, petrology and structural geology — what rocks are and what has happened to them.
  • Sedimentology and stratigraphy: reading a sequence of layers as a history, which is the core skill of the subject.
  • Geophysics — seismic, gravity and magnetic methods for seeing what cannot be dug up.
  • Hydrogeology and geochemistry, increasingly important as water and contamination become the questions.
  • Fieldwork, mapping and, in most programmes, a substantial independent field project.

The hardest part

Fieldwork is physically demanding, sometimes remote, and not optional. Academically the challenge is the three-dimensional and four-dimensional reasoning — inferring a structure and its history from partial exposures — which some people find natural and others never quite do. The career difficulty is sectoral: this degree is closely tied to energy and mining, and those industries hire in cycles.

What you need to get in

By school system. Requirements are set by individual universities and change — confirm on the course page for the year you apply.

Saudi curriculum track

requiredمسار علوم الحاسب والهندسة or مسار الصحة والحياة

Either science-side track works. KFUPM and King Saud University are the established domestic routes, and both feed the energy and mining sectors directly.

A-Level

helpsMathematics · Physics · Chemistry · Geography · Biology

Most departments ask for two sciences or a science plus geography, with mathematics required for geophysics specifically. Geology A-Level, where offered, is welcome and rarely required.

IB Diploma

helpsPhysics HL · Chemistry HL · Geography HL · Mathematics SL or above

Two Group 4 subjects, or one plus geography, is the usual shape. Geophysics wants HL mathematics.

Advanced Placement

helpsAP Environmental Science · AP Physics 1 · AP Chemistry · AP Calculus AB · AP Human Geography

There is no AP Geology; environmental science and the physical sciences are the closest preparation.

IGCSE

Separate sciences plus geography, which is genuinely relevant here rather than merely allowed.

Tests and other gates

  • ESATOctober

Cambridge natural sciences only; most earth science courses require no test.

  • Qudurat and TahsiliGrade 11 and 12

    The Saudi admission composite.

What closes this door

  • Geophysics is closed without strong mathematics; general geology is among the more accessible science degrees.
  • Fieldwork requirements can be a genuine barrier for some physical conditions, and programmes vary in how they accommodate that — ask before applying.

Where it leads

Careers written up on this site, and the reason each one follows from this degree.

  • Geologist

The direct destination — minerals, energy, water and ground investigation.

  • Reservoir Engineer

Subsurface energy work, reachable from geoscience with a further degree.

  • Petroleum Engineer

The adjacent discipline; the two work the same problem from different ends.

  • Civil Engineer

Geotechnical work, where ground conditions decide what can be built.

  • Renewable Energy Engineer

Geothermal, carbon storage and site assessment for large-scale solar and wind.

  • Regulatory Inspector

    Mining, groundwater and environmental regulation.

  • Epidemiologist

Not a direct route, and environmental exposure work sits between the two fields.

And, without a page here yet

  • Mining exploration and mine geology
  • Hydrogeology and water resources
  • Environmental consulting and contaminated land
  • Geohazard assessment and engineering geology
  • Academic research and geological surveys

What it is not

  • That it is oil or nothing. Mining, water, construction, carbon storage and hazard assessment are all substantial employers, and in the Kingdom mining is growing fastest.
  • That it is an easy science. The field mapping project defeats more students than any examination.
  • That the fieldwork is a holiday. It is weeks of walking, measuring and recording in difficult terrain and weather.

In Saudi Arabia

This is one of the clearest fits between a degree and Saudi industrial policy. Ma'aden and the mining sector are an explicit diversification priority with substantial new exploration; the Saudi Geological Survey, groundwater management and the energy sector are all long-standing employers; and carbon storage is emerging. The Kingdom's geology is also unusually well exposed and interesting, which matters more than it sounds when the fieldwork is on your doorstep rather than a flight away.

Consider instead

Same interest, different trade-off — the most useful section on this page and the easiest to skip.

The parts that go out of date

Entry requirements are the fastest-moving information on this site. These are the statements most likely to have changed.

  • Energy and mining hiring is cyclical and the current Saudi mining expansion is policy-driven rather than guaranteed.
  • Entry requirements for geophysics differ substantially from general geology and are stated per course.

Where this came from

Admission patterns stated by earth sciences departments in the UK, the Gulf and the US, which typically require two sciences or a science plus geography. Destination patterns reasoned from the structure of the energy and mining sectors.

Last checked 2026-09-06. The requirements above describe the pattern across universities, not any one of them — the course page for the year you apply is the only thing that is ever authoritative.
