Engineering
Civil Engineering
Buildings, bridges, water, roads and everything a country is physically made of. The engineering discipline with the clearest public consequence, and the one where a signature carries legal weight.
- How long
- Four to five years, plus several years of supervised experience before chartered or professional status.
- Called
- BEng · MEng · BSc Civil Engineering · بكالوريوس الهندسة المدنية
What you actually study
As opposed to what the name suggests.
- Structural analysis and design in steel, concrete and timber — how a structure carries load and how it fails.
- Geotechnics: soil, foundations and the ground, which is the least predictable material any engineer works with.
- Water and environmental engineering — supply, drainage, treatment and flood management.
- Transportation and infrastructure planning, plus construction management and cost.
- Codes and standards, which are the profession's accumulated memory of everything that has collapsed.
The hardest part
Learning to work with genuine uncertainty and be responsible anyway. Ground conditions are never fully known, loads are estimates, and materials vary — yet somebody has to sign. The academic difficulty is moderate by engineering standards; the professional weight is the highest of any engineering discipline, and it arrives earlier than people expect.
What you need to get in
By school system. Requirements are set by individual universities and change — confirm on the course page for the year you apply.
Saudi curriculum track
requiredمسار علوم الحاسب والهندسة — Computer Science and Engineering
The engineering track and the standard composite. Civil is among the larger engineering intakes in the Kingdom because the construction programme is.
A-Level
requiredMathematics · Physics
helpsFurther Mathematics · Design and Technology · Geography
Some universities accept a strong mathematics grade with chemistry or design in place of physics; most do not. Treat physics as required.
IB Diploma
requiredMathematics: Analysis and Approaches HL · Physics HL
helpsDesign Technology · Geography
A small number of civil departments accept Maths AI HL, which is more flexibility than mechanical or electrical allow — check the specific course.
Advanced Placement
helpsAP Calculus BC · AP Physics C: Mechanics · AP Physics 1 · AP Environmental Science
Mechanics is the relevant physics. Environmental Science is genuinely useful for the water and sustainability side.
IGCSE
Extended-tier mathematics and physics as a separate science. Geography is a useful and underrated companion.
Tests and other gates
- ESATOctober
Cambridge and Imperial only; most universities require no test.
- Qudurat and TahsiliGrade 11 and 12
The Saudi admission composite for engineering colleges.
- IELTS, TOEFL or STEPBefore enrolment
Decides whether an English preparatory year is required.
What closes this door
- Without mathematics and physics at A-Level or HL, accredited civil engineering is closed at most universities.
- An unaccredited degree can prevent Council registration, which in civil engineering matters more than in most disciplines because sign-off authority is the job.
Where it leads
Careers written up on this site, and the reason each one follows from this degree.
- Civil Engineer
The direct destination — infrastructure, water, transport and construction.
- Structural Engineer
The specialism inside it, and the one that carries the signature.
- Architect
Adjacent rather than identical: the two professions design the same building from different ends.
- Renewable Energy Engineer
Foundations, sites and grid infrastructure for solar and wind at scale.
- Regulatory Inspector
Building control, safety and standards enforcement.
- Geologist
Geotechnical work sits between the two disciplines and moves in both directions.
- Management Consultant
Infrastructure advisory and major project consulting.
And, without a page here yet
- Construction and project management
- Water resources and environmental engineering
- Transport planning and highways
- Quantity surveying and cost consulting
- Urban development and masterplanning
What it is not
- That it is the least technical engineering degree. The mathematics is comparable; the uncertainty is greater, which is harder rather than easier.
- That the work is site work. Most civil engineers spend the majority of their time on design, analysis and documentation, with site periods rather than site careers.
- That construction demand is permanent. It is strongly cyclical everywhere — including here, where the current cycle is exceptional rather than normal.
In Saudi Arabia
This is the discipline most directly attached to the Kingdom's construction programme, which is the largest in the world by value and is the whole argument for and against the degree. The demand is real and it is cyclical: build-outs end. Saudi Council of Engineers registration is required to practise, and civil engineering is one of the fields where registration and sign-off authority materially determine your career, so accreditation of a foreign degree must be confirmed before enrolling.
Consider instead
Same interest, different trade-off — the most useful section on this page and the easiest to skip.
- ArchitectureThe same buildings, designed from the form side rather than the load side, and portfolio-assessed.
- Mechanical EngineeringBroader and less cyclical, with employers in every industry rather than mainly construction.
- Earth Sciences and GeologyThe ground itself — geotechnics is where the two meet.
- Environmental ScienceWater, drainage and sustainability, through science rather than design.
The parts that go out of date
Entry requirements are the fastest-moving information on this site. These are the statements most likely to have changed.
- Whether physics can be substituted at a given university varies and is stated per course.
- Construction demand in the Kingdom is tied to the giga-project programme and its timelines have been revised more than once.
Where this came from
Admission patterns stated by accredited civil engineering schools in the UK, the Gulf and the US. Professional registration through the Saudi Council of Engineers governs practice in the Kingdom.
