Engineering

Petroleum Engineering

Getting hydrocarbons out of rock, economically and safely. The highest-paying engineering degree in the Kingdom, tied to a single industry, and the one whose long-run future is genuinely contested.

How long
Four to five years, with a preparatory year common and industrial placement standard.

What you actually study

As opposed to what the name suggests.

  • Reservoir engineering — fluid behaviour in porous rock, and how much of it can actually be recovered.
  • Drilling engineering: well design, mud, pressure control and the mechanics of putting a hole several kilometres into the ground.
  • Production engineering — lifting, separating and processing what comes up.
  • Geology and geophysics, enough to read the subsurface and argue with the geologists productively.
  • Petroleum economics, because every technical decision here is ultimately a return-on-investment decision.

The hardest part

Not the coursework, which is comparable to other engineering. It is the career risk, and being honest about it is the point of this page: the degree is narrow, tied to one industry, and that industry is cyclical and politically exposed. Petroleum engineering graduates in the 2015 and 2020 downturns found the specialism that paid best also transferred worst. In Saudi Arabia that risk is smaller than almost anywhere else — and it is not zero.

What you need to get in

By school system. Requirements are set by individual universities and change — confirm on the course page for the year you apply.

Saudi curriculum track

requiredمسار علوم الحاسب والهندسة — Computer Science and Engineering

The engineering track, and KFUPM is the dominant route into this sector domestically. Admission thresholds for petroleum engineering are among the highest in Saudi engineering because the destination is Aramco.

A-Level

requiredMathematics · Physics

helpsChemistry · Further Mathematics · Geography

Chemistry is required by some programmes and recommended by most; geology, where offered, is genuinely relevant.

IB Diploma

requiredMathematics: Analysis and Approaches HL · Physics HL

helpsChemistry HL · Geography

The standard engineering shape, with chemistry more useful here than in mechanical or electrical.

Advanced Placement

helpsAP Calculus BC · AP Physics C: Mechanics · AP Chemistry · AP Environmental Science

The usual engineering preparation; chemistry matters more here than for most engineering degrees.

IGCSE

Extended-tier mathematics and separate sciences. Geography is an unusually useful companion for the subsurface side.

Tests and other gates

  • Qudurat and TahsiliGrade 11 and 12

The Saudi composite. Petroleum engineering at KFUPM admits high, because everyone is aiming at the same employer.

  • IELTS, TOEFL or STEPBefore enrolment

KFUPM teaches in English and runs a preparatory year for those below the bar.

What closes this door

  • Without mathematics and physics at A-Level or HL, this is closed.
  • The degree itself is a narrowing decision: it transfers into general engineering less easily than mechanical or chemical engineering transfer into petroleum.

Where it leads

Careers written up on this site, and the reason each one follows from this degree.

  • Petroleum Engineer

The direct destination, and in the Kingdom a well-defined and well-paid one.

  • Reservoir Engineer

The subsurface specialism — modelling what the field will do over decades.

  • Geologist

The adjacent discipline; petroleum engineers and geologists work the same problem from two directions.

  • Chemical Engineer

Downstream processing and refining, a common lateral move within the same employers.

  • Renewable Energy Engineer

Carbon capture, geothermal and hydrogen all use subsurface and process skills directly.

  • Management Consultant

Energy advisory, where sector knowledge is the scarce input.

  • Policy Analyst

Energy policy and regulation, an expanding field as the transition is negotiated.

And, without a page here yet

  • Oilfield services and technology companies
  • Energy trading and commercial roles
  • Carbon storage and subsurface energy transition projects
  • Well integrity and safety authority roles
  • Energy economics and investment analysis

What it is not

  • That the industry is ending. Demand forecasts differ sharply and the Kingdom's production position is among the most durable in the world — but the honest answer is that this is contested, and a forty-year career is a long bet.
  • That it is all rigs and deserts. Most petroleum engineers work in offices and control rooms, with field rotations rather than field careers.
  • That it always pays more. It pays more in the Kingdom and in the good years elsewhere; in downturns it is among the first specialisms cut.

In Saudi Arabia

This is the degree with the tightest fit to the Saudi economy and the most concentrated destination: Aramco and its supply chain. Pay and stability are exceptional by any international standard, and KFUPM's pipeline into the sector is well established. Weigh two things. The concentration means your career is exposed to one industry and, to a degree, one employer. And Vision 2030's explicit objective is diversification away from that dependence — which is a policy aimed, in the long run, at reducing the share of the economy this degree serves. Neither point makes it a bad choice; both make it a choice worth making deliberately.

Consider instead

Same interest, different trade-off — the most useful section on this page and the easiest to skip.

The parts that go out of date

Entry requirements are the fastest-moving information on this site. These are the statements most likely to have changed.

  • Long-run hydrocarbon demand is genuinely contested and forecasts differ by decades. Treat any confident statement about it, including an optimistic one, with caution.
  • Aramco and sector hiring volumes move with investment cycles and are not published as forward commitments.

Where this came from

Admission patterns stated by petroleum engineering programmes at KFUPM and internationally, which name mathematics, physics and usually chemistry. Employment patterns reasoned from the structure of the Saudi energy sector.

Last checked 2026-09-06. The requirements above describe the pattern across universities, not any one of them — the course page for the year you apply is the only thing that is ever authoritative.
