Design, media and the built environment

Architecture

Design, engineering and regulation in one long qualification, assessed on a portfolio you have to start building years before you apply. The longest non-medical route to a professional title.

How long
Five to seven years in total across degree, practical experience and professional examinations. The Saudi and US B.Arch routes run five years; the UK route is three plus a year out plus two.

What you actually study

As opposed to what the name suggests.

  • Design studio, which is the degree — long projects, crits where your work is publicly criticised, and hours nothing else prepares you for.
  • History and theory of architecture, which is more central than students expect and shapes how you argue for a design.
  • Structures, environmental design and building services — enough engineering to know what is possible and to talk to the engineers.
  • Building regulation, codes and professional practice, because architecture is a legally constrained activity.
  • Drawing, modelling and digital tools throughout, from hand sketching to BIM.

The hardest part

Studio culture and the hours. Architecture students work longer than almost any other undergraduates, and the work is subjective — you can work for six weeks and be told the idea is wrong. The second difficulty is the length and the pay: it takes five to seven years to qualify, and early-career architectural salaries are low relative to that investment and well below what engineering graduates earn at the same age.

What you need to get in

By school system. Requirements are set by individual universities and change — confirm on the course page for the year you apply.

Saudi curriculum track

requiredمسار علوم الحاسب والهندسة — Computer Science and Engineering

Architecture sits in the engineering colleges here, so the engineering track with mathematics and physics is the route. That is a meaningful difference from the UK, where architecture is often reachable from an arts-side profile.

A-Level

helpsArt and Design · Mathematics · Physics · Design and Technology · History of Art

Requirements are unusually varied: some schools want mathematics and physics, some want art, and many want a portfolio above everything. Check three specific schools before choosing at sixteen — this is the subject where general advice is least reliable.

IB Diploma

helpsVisual Arts HL · Mathematics · Physics · Design Technology

The combination depends on whether the school treats architecture as an art or an engineering subject, and both models exist.

Advanced Placement

helpsAP Art and Design · AP Calculus AB · AP Physics 1 · AP Art History

AP Art and Design is portfolio-assessed, which makes it the single most directly useful AP for this degree.

IGCSE

Art and Design matters, because the portfolio starts here. Mathematics and physics keep the engineering-side schools open.

Tests and other gates

  • PortfolioBuilt over one to two years before applying

The decisive requirement at most schools, and the one that cannot be assembled in a month. Drawing, models, photography and sketchbooks showing how you think, not just finished pieces.

  • InterviewAfter shortlisting

Usually a conversation about your portfolio. Being able to explain why you made a decision matters more than the decision.

  • Qudurat and TahsiliGrade 11 and 12

The Saudi admission composite, since architecture sits in the engineering colleges.

What closes this door

  • Without a portfolio, most schools of architecture will not consider the application at all — and it takes a year or more to build.
  • In the Kingdom, choosing a non-engineering track closes architecture at the public universities, because the faculty sits inside engineering.
  • An unaccredited programme can block professional registration later, which in architecture determines whether you can use the title at all.

Where it leads

Careers written up on this site, and the reason each one follows from this degree.

  • Architect

The direct destination, after the full professional qualification sequence.

  • Structural Engineer

The other half of the same building; some architects move across via a further degree, and the two work together constantly.

  • Civil Engineer

Infrastructure and construction, reachable with a conversion and a common adjacent path.

  • UX Designer

A well-documented exit: the design process — research, constraints, iteration, users — transfers almost directly and pays sooner.

  • Renewable Energy Engineer

Building performance and sustainable design, which is where architectural regulation is heading.

  • Regulatory Inspector

Building control, planning enforcement and heritage regulation.

And, without a page here yet

  • Urban design and masterplanning
  • Interior architecture and exhibition design
  • Construction project management
  • Architectural visualisation and computational design
  • Heritage conservation
  • Property development

What it is not

  • That it is an art degree. It is a regulated technical profession with an art-school teaching method, and the regulation is half the job.
  • That you design whole buildings early. New architects detail, document and coordinate for years before designing anything with their name on it.
  • That the pay matches the training. It does not for a long time, and this is the most common reason people leave the profession after qualifying.

In Saudi Arabia

The Kingdom is running one of the largest construction programmes in the world, and the giga-projects have brought international architecture practices here in numbers. That creates genuine demand and a genuine caution: much of the headline design work is done by foreign practices, and the domestic role is often coordination and delivery rather than concept design. Saudi Council of Engineers registration governs practice, architecture sits within the engineering colleges, and accreditation of a foreign degree should be verified before enrolling.

The parts that go out of date

Entry requirements are the fastest-moving information on this site. These are the statements most likely to have changed.

  • Subject requirements for architecture vary more between universities than for any other degree on this page.
  • Professional registration routes differ by country and the UK route in particular has been under review.

Where this came from

Admission patterns stated by schools of architecture in the UK, the Gulf and the US, most of which require a portfolio, and the multi-part professional qualification structure that follows the degree.

Last checked 2026-09-06. The requirements above describe the pattern across universities, not any one of them — the course page for the year you apply is the only thing that is ever authoritative.
